Is a directory profitable?

yes. we just started link directory to just promote our websites & you can say just for funs .But we start making money with our link directory . 3 or 4 SEO compnays paying to post their links .
So answer is yes directorys are profitable .For us it is .

yes, i agree it takes a long time, but its also important to add daily new or fresh content in directories. In that way it may helpful and profitable.

it depends what kind of directory, if its a local directory offering business listings locally then yeah it can work well

 

yes of course directories are a beneficial business but for that u need to gain a good PR ,once a good PR is achieved,then make a decent profit.

I'm going to go with "maybe" as my answer. The "link based" directory market is pretty overblown at this point, spam has taken the lead from real, solid directories. Starting a directory for the sole purpose of collecting "tech sites" and trying to charge without much effort being invested won't turn much.

Going off what Jasonb was getting at, I've been doing some research into that very thing. I live in a small town community with a good amount of local "handyman" businesses. My dad owns his own and now I've got small thing going as well. It'd be great to open up a local directory to promote around the community with fliers and the sort. Would get a lot of targeted traffic, and companies wouldn't have a problem paying for that around here. With some effort and a few bucks a project like that could bring in a decent amount of money each year.

 

One directory can be very profitable just depends how you market it an how much traffic you get an how often you want to spend on designing the directory.

I can list many directory's where it shows it.

Having only one quality and well maintaned direcotry is much better than having so many domains.

 

Directory is profitable if your directory is old like 4 5 years and with high PR... if your directory is new then you need to work hard so far and then you get more profit from one directory..... now a days directories are very profitable because google search engine catch the directory so far and may be in future directory will give u more profit because many people are going to focus on directory submission..... All business are profitable if you spend time and money that's it .............

 

I agree... and all it need is hard work if you really want to make it profitable... there's no easy thing in this world, hehe...
