Is a dash and vertical line counted the same?

I see titles that have a vertical line and think that's a great idea. Is it counted as a space just like the "-" or could this hurt in SEO? Also I would like to make a forum signature with the vertical lines but not sure how to do it. I did a search but for some reason couldn't find it. Your help is appreciated.

It does not hurt SEO.
If you wish to use vertical line it should be like this : eg. Search Engine Optimization | SEO Tools
And link it with eg. www.mysite.com/search-engine-optimization/seo-tools.html
