Is a 455kb home page too large? how bout 1.3MB?

My home page is roughly 455kb static.

Once the static home page has loaded a script begins downloading enlarged images of thumbnails on the page producing a zoom box when you move the cursor over them so you can see the pictures in much greater detail. These enlarged images make my page around 1.3MB in total.

Just wondering would it bother you that after the page has loaded the site begins downloading hidden images you may not even end up looking at.

    What do you think?

I think only people still on dialup will notice any lag at all.

That is a lot for full page load, try to keep it under 600kb...

I think more than 1MB is way to big, try to compress some images to get under 1mb.

It's much better to make images load on demand, one of the reasons why the concept of precaching is hated by web servers and users alike. ;)

Does anybody really even use dialup anymore? Haha.

Generally it's good to keep your pages below 1mb. I try to stay under 800kb.

A study this year revealed that 9% of the total users online in the states are still on dialup.

I think the question is how long does your site take to load. If it takes longer than 8 seconds I might browse to another site instead. What does your ISP think about that, and what will the effect be if you get 1000 visitors? will your site still be fast?

Not So Bad. Broadband users should be fine. Dial-up might have a problem but who is still on dial up?
