301 (permanent) redirection is not bad at all :)

Here you should redirect 1-1 page from old to newer one (i mean old domain seo page should redirect to new domain seo page and so on). It will pass search engine rankings in few days and PR will be passed in next PR updates.

You'll have to do a 301 redirect for your domain (old domain to new one) as well as for each of your pages. You can choose to redirect the domain only but you will lose any backlinks you've made for your pages as the links to these pages will no longer work once your old domain expires.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

    I agree with affilorama,

You will lose some backlinks but if you keep working on link building, it wont affect more.

Here you traffic and organic rankings will be transferred to new domain.

Since i couldn't find any appropriate answer to my specific question, I wanted to ask you.

I've read alot of things about the 301-redirect for moving pages and so on. A customer of mine has booked a new domain last year for better search results (he included his main keyword into the domain. Before he had only a domain with his business name, which had nothing to say about what he does).
I told him, that he should do a 301-redirect so he doesn't loose his position in Google and to redirect all new customers coming from the old domain to the new domain.
After about one year where his site hat a good amount of traffic the search results of Google for his keywords are getting more worse. Since he didn't maintain his website (no new content, bad content on all pages and so on) I assumed this would be the problem.
He gave his website to another company which also makes websites. They told him, that this 301-redirection is very bad for his website. They removed it, and also updated his content and the template so now he has the same meta keywords on every page (instead of the specific ones I put there before). He also removed the canonical-tag which I placed there to ensure no duplicate content.
What I am now afraid of is, that without this redirect Google now will find duplicate content and therefore kick him out of the index, which would be a nightmare, since most of his customers come over his website.
I need verification of the fact, that the 301 isn't bad but in fact the correct way of working with 2 domains. If possible with good sources I can point out to him since he don't wants to hear anything about this.
If someone also has a few words about the keywords and the canonical-tag I would really appreciate it!
    Thank you very much!

    Dear seoindiadelhifd,

I reviewed your case and i understand the situation...here i would like to share my experience with one website that can help you/your client to understand that 301 redirection is not bad at all.

I worked with one client who had to move whole website from one domain to new one due to copyright issue (his current domain contains word which was copyright of other company).

Status of website before 301 redirection:
    - website pr 2
    - generating 100+ unique visitors per day
    - was in Google.com top 10 result for almost 20+ high competitive keywords
    - more then 20 links in Google (when you search with link:domain name) and more then 200 in Google webmaster result

Now, we have no choice other then moving whole website to newer domain.

    We did:

    - Bought new domain and create same website with same content/meta tags (here url of new website will be differ as domain name is changed).
    - we did domain to domain and page to page 301 redirection

    Result

    - Rankings for old domain was there in Google result for first week and wen visitors click on that result; he was redirected to newer domain
    - after few days, google started showing result of new domain instead of older one
    - traffic was decreased around 5% for first month but recovered soon
    - PR was passed in next PR updates after 2 months.

Its been 1.5 years now and the new domain is now authority website in respective niche.

I am sure your client will understand the importance of 301 redirection now :)

feel free to contact me if you still have any query.

    all the best

Redirections are an essential part of any website's SEO strategy. Whether or not you currently use a redirect on your website, you could be hurting your website's standings with Google and risking a penalty. The fact is, there are times when using a redirect is absolutely essential to your website, and there are uses of redirects that can hurt your website as well.
