Is 3,000 backlinks in 2 months too much?

Discussion in 'Google' started by frosty, Apr 29, 2007.

Hi, my site recently got 3,000 backlinks over a 2 month period. I'd say that on average it was about 10 links a day with a few intermittent surges (with a few hundred links added in each surge, I'd guess there were about 5 or 6 surges).

I noticed my site's position in some SERP's wobbling recently and I've been getting a little nervous. :( My site is still fairly new (less than 4 months) Should I be nervous?

    Thank you.

    the # really doesnt matter.
I launched a site in Feb, 75,000 links since launching.

Google looks more at your category - if other sites in your category grow links fast, then you're fine.
It's all about patterns and staying within the standard deviation.

Be more careful with sudden backlinks , because google will put you in sandbox.

I disagree, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Just wait until it all settles in and you'll see where you're ranked :)

softarea51, the easiest way I can assume for such a massive backlinks is forum signature.

I'm totally not aware of penalty for huge backlinks increment.

Yeah, I wonder how they could penalize you for too many links since you do not have control over who links to you. For example, if you offered a lot of original news content and many other sites linked to you because of you quality up to date information (an example might be the Drudge report), how could that be your fault? I suppose they look at the quality of the links as well (iow link farms are bad).

And this is the most ridiculous thing I have heard ... if it worked that way you could easily do it for your competitors :)

I wouldn't worry about it. It wouldn't be uncommon for us to generate over 3000 links to a new site we launch in 2 months...

For example - a site we launched about 100 days ago - now shows 68,000 links to it and the sub pages (measured using the google webmaster tools Links page). However about 50 or 55,000 of those links are from an article directory. The rest are all from various sites all over the net.

Google seems to like the site - its rank consistently in the number 1 and 2 spots in the SERP.

A lot of the links are from forum signatures, blog comments, other blogs, myspace pages, social networking sites and social bookmarking sites.

I would be hesitant only if what your doing to promote your site is unnatural... then i would be concerned... otherwise i wouldn't worry about.

No the most ridiculous thing ever was the guy who said that you could get indexed quicker by typing your URL into Google Search a bunch of times. He also said that you can increase your PR by linking to high quality sites.

Too many links can raise flags but as long as its within bounds, it should be OK. Make sure the links are from good places and not spammy sites.

I had 230.000+ backlinks when I launched a site a few months ago, and I didn't get banned..

(I was added in a network with sites. Got links from all of them!)

How do you get 5,413 posts and still think that getting too many links raises red flags? Google isn't the IRS and there are no red flags that go up when you get incoming links.

By simply applying a little common sense, you'll see that your statement is completely pointless. Say you come up with the cure for cancer tomorrow...do you realize how many people are going to link to you? And let me guess...Google will ban you right? Or say I want to knock off my competitor...I would be able to have them removed from the index by simply purchasing 30,000 spammy links. It makes no sense.

I disagree with that. I had a site banned for getting too many backlinks in a short period of time (about 100k in a few months). There was no way it could have been banned unless a red flag had been raised.

I imagine if a certain pattern emerges with links (same anchor text to the same pages), it would get flagged, and they probably get whoever to hand review them.

If you're good at design/css, release free wordpress themes. You'll get more backlinks than you'll know what to do with :)
