Is 25,000 competing websites too much if you are building a sniper site?

I like to put it this way.

Search rankings are like swimming. It doesn't matter how deep the water is, because you're only using the top of it anyway.

If you can outrank any of the sites on the first page, you'll automatically outrank all the sites on all the other pages, too. Who cares how many competitors there are? 8.3 million? Pfft. If the #1 site is crap, and I can outrank it, the rest of them don't matter.

oh well if it were a real sniper site I wouldn't be worrying about competing pages ;)

thanks for the replies. I guess I should go by the strength of the sites on the first page judging by replies... makes sense too...

I wont' judge by how many are there but the strength of those that are on top.

Think about this if the PR7 etc. , how do you plan to out rank that? There is more to look at then just how many sites there are. Also if your looking for keywords, why not input the name of the web-site's that are on the top page and plug it into Google Keyword.

    Best of Luck

This is NOT the way to find competition figures.

When people search on the internet they do NOT put their search in quotes do they.

Take the blinkers off and try your search again without quotes and see the real world.

Would a fully optimised sniper site outrank ezinearticles, goarticles for the keyword phrase?

Without backlinks, I doubt it. Sniper sites rely strictly on on-page optimization according to the Google Sniper manual. Almost any keyword that gets a decent amount of traffic is going to have some sort of competition on the first page and you will need to build backlinks to it in order to rank.
