One website seems like less work...

But surely long term, 5 websites can grow more...?

I would prefer one site that is earning USD400, rather then 5 separately.

1 Site is obviously better because it means less work in developing.

That is what happened to me. Yesterday and today my main site (which is making about $40-50 a day) is down due to host's fault.

So I'll go to 5 sites

    1 site is better.

But if i can make 1 site earns $400/day, i will try to make 5 more other sites that will earn the same amount. Isn't that great? The more the merrier...

    I haven't voted yet..

It would depend on potential of the sites in question.
1 website maybe less work..but will popularity/virility (viral marketing) diminish over time, compared to 5 sites that continue to grow due business model?(even if just 2 or 3 of the 5 sites grow thats 2/5's more revenue than 1 site could realise.

Personally i would diversify over 5 sites or more. With each site using a different revenue raising model (i.e affiliates/adsense/subscriptions etc) If one particular site doesn't work..then there is still revenue coming in from other sites while you work on the problem site. (Although in my opinion with right marketing/promotion strategy problems would only happen from external sources, like webwork said.
    Another point,
Having more than 1 site with different strategies might prove another strategy is more profitable than what 1 site/strategy would yeild.

Well it's more fun to have lots of sites, but from a work-vs-income-perspective one site must me easier to maintain and takes less effort to keep up to date!

It really depends on your strategy.

From a simple maths perspective, $400 is still $400. However, if you are looking at spreading your risk then maybe several sites are not a bad option. What I would say though is work on a site, built it up and then move onto the next otherwise you'll get yourself into a mess as its not easy to manage several sites, no matter how small they are.

    Good luck.

    I'd say 5

I own 7 sites right now...
during the Page rank Update thingy..google first deindexed 3 of my sites...One of them just got back..and 2 are still dead...if I had one website and if it had been indexed that would have left me with $0/day...I'd go with the second option....cuz thats the reason why I survived..

You should build one "main site" and then create 4 sub-sites to the same site and link back and build a "blogfarm", but do it "legally" and make money from 5 sites 1+4 and then you can experiement with the smaller ones, update less often etc..

I have 12 opt-in pages for the same product all on different blogs and squeeze pages driving traffic from multiple sources.. Each sites has 3,000 visitors a month... That's 36,000 visitors (awesome!) About 100/day or so.. not more not less... But it's steady!

I don't use adsense on all of them, but experiementing with it and it's intereseting to see that my oldest and smallest sites are the ones making "all the money"... they've got 20-50 visitors per day and making $1 or so here and there, but it's been doing that for so long that it adds up now.

    This option is better

"1 Website that earns 400$ per day"

But I think making more than 1 site is good. Don't put all eggs in one basket :)
