Hello, I applied for a TIN for my LLC couple of weeks ago, I received a letter from the IRS today has a title "Official Business Penalty for Private Use, $300". What does this means? Should I have to pay a $300 penalty? and for what? I don't understand. Thank you in advance.
What are you referring to? The warning on the outside of the envelope that using the postage for personal use has a penalty?
Certain Government envelopes do not require a postage stamp. It is free for the government to use, and to mail a letter without a stamp, for official business. They put a warning on the envelope to warn people that using a "free" envelope to mail your personal letters is a against the law and is punishable with a fine. The warning is not meant for the recipient of the letter, you, and has no significance unless you use one of those "stamp free" envelopes for personal use. Just as the poster above suggests. Hope that clears it up for you.
If you don't mind me asking what was the letter from the IRS for . Was you being audit because I have one today's
