Iran has purchased ground-to-ground missiles from North Korea with a range of 2,500 kilometers, the head of the Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Branch, Major General Amos Yadlin, said Wednesday.

While Iran already possessed missiles capable of reaching Israel, the new weapons pose a threat for countries in Europe and parts of the Middle East that have now come into Iranian range. Some of the missiles have already arrived in Iran.

The missiles are known in the West as BM-25s, operate on liquid fuel and are single-stage. The BM-25 was originally manufactured in the Soviet Union, where the first generation, adapted for use by Soviet submarines and able to carry a nuclear warhead, was known as the SSN6. After the Russians retired the missiles from service, they sold them to the North Koreans, who developed them to carry a heavier payload.

With this purchase the Iranians have leap-frogged over their Shihab-4 missile with its range of 2,000 kilometers.

**Although some of you are safe....

There have never been peace on this earth. We have different interests that oppose each other. A snake want to eat a rat, but the rat want to survive. It's natural.

I think he's implying that Israel is using this to encourage Europe to toughen up on Iran.

You could be right...but just like Iraq there's more than one source.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060427/wl_nm/mideast_iran_missiles_dc_2

"In February, a German diplomat, citing his country's intelligence data, confirmed a German newspaper report that said Iran had purchased 18 disassembled BM-25s from North Korea."

Purchasing missiles is not equal with having an nuclear bomb to mount on top. Probably Iran is more dangerous than Iraq , in terms of damage power, but not even close to the dimension that media suggest.

Of coarse not, but when's the last time someone used a missile like that for bottle rocket explosive?....

    ; )

I never look at the media as a benfactor of truth, rather the slant which all people want to hear.

I am still completely optomistic that Iran will fall on its own. The young people their love freedom, and seek what the west has to offer. Given enough time they will likely overthrow their government.

That's a pretty violent approach. I'd prefer we use diplomacy first like we did with Iraq.

I'm sure Iran is concerned only about an invasion of wild elephants from the african plains, possibly rabid komodo dragons from madagascar. There can be no other use for this long range missile :p

What damage can they do with some missiles?

They know as soon as they fire a single missile, the world would nuke them. In my opinion, they've just wasted a lot of money marketing some hype.

It's called baiting. Their impotent leader is hoping to sway public opinion to his corner by instigating intervention by the US. And we all know how mean, nasty, terrible and dishonest we all are in the US. If the US attacks, Iran will be perceived as being picked on.

I say ignore the little child. Isn't this the same country that makes their satellite dish antennas out of old soda cans? I'd be very surprised if they got a bottle rocket off the ground, much less a ballistic nuclear missile.

Yeah, but the mullahs might leave the country and take the gold with them. Look what happened in Uzbekistan.

No, the first post gives you a picture of the range. Although it's close enough to scare the living $hit out of the cartoon people....the question is: are they that crazy?
