Dude, he was pointing out the massive lie that the media has told you about the "wiped off the face of the earth" BS quote.

It has been proven that he was misquoted yet you still believe the BS.

"The establishment of Zionist regime was a move by the world oppressor against the Islamic world," he said, according to the press agency. "The skirmishes in the occupied land are part of the war of destiny. The outcome of hundreds of years of war will be defined in Palestinian land."

Referring to comments by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic revolution, Admadinejad said, "As the imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map." Ahmadinejad's predecessor, Mohammad Khatami, in contrast, proposed a dialogue among civilizations and pursued a policy of détente."

Sound pretty clear what he meant

Iran has been the most anti western nation in the middle east for about 30 years. They don't have great friends in the middle east. Sunni nations distrust Iran. If there was one strong impetus to the Annapolis peace effort made by the Bush administration it was the fear of the development of nuclear weapons by Iran. It spurred Saudi participation in this effort. A first in history for getting Saudi participation.

Iran has been developing ever more powerful rocketry with an ability to now reach Europe.

The most difficult thing for intelligence agencies is to determine if nations are actually building wpm and/or nuclear weaponry.

Any effort is developed in a highly restricted secretive community within the nation and excluded from visability by its own population let alone any moles/spys intelligence on the ground by other nations. It has been that way for decades.

There is no hard knowledge from the outside world into what Iran is doing one way or the other.

As to the use of language. In terms of Western interpretation of the language used by various leaders of Arab nations there is now a long history of usage of words that take on multiple meanings. Arafat used that when in negotiations with Israel, couching terms that were interpreted one way by westerners and a second way within the Islamic community. Hamas recently did the same changing language to discuss some level of truce efforts with Israel.

It is not different than the political code language used for years within the US.

The broad or implicit understanding of the language used was to infer or imply that Israel should be wiped off the map. If the President of Iran meant differently he should explicitly say so in terms that all can understand.

Doing anything but that leaves the language open to interpretation but more importantly allows for two types of interpretation.....the weasely language used to reinterpret the words...and the underlying meaning.

Uhm, guys he was speaking in what I assume was Farsi or Arabic, so it's a translation, and he was quoting the Ayatollah Khomeini. Like, not just stealing his material, but actually saying, "this is what the Ayatollah said".

This has been debunked by translators numerous times, you can find the details on the Ahmadinejad entry at Wikipedia. It's been purposefully misspun, the same way that there are still a lot of people who think Saddam Hussein planned 9/11, those nutbars who insist today that there were WMD in Iraq.

Surely y'all know what newspeak is?

This is good for Iran but it's bad for the UN and America.

He didn't even mention Israel by name, he said the "Regime occupieing Jerusalem must be wiped from the pages of time" - When we wanted Communism wiped from the pages of time in the Soviet era, we did not want Russia wiped off the map did we?

It is the same principle here, Ahmedinejad see's the current Israeli goverment as an unfair, unjust power ruling a land which is very holy to all Christians, Jews and Muslims. No justice, no peace.
