No, not necessarily the Iranian protests. What I meant is for the stoning penalty specifically for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, do you think worldwide protests, contacting the International Red Cross, UN High Commissioner for the Office of Human Rights, and even your government to request that they reconsider this, do you feel it might possibly help?

    Edit:
P.S. I know that's kind of a hard question to answer, I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I was just interested in your perspective, especially being that you're in Iran. Thanks.

absolutely they are effective, if UN or other international organizations to pressure Iranian regime, probably Sakineh will survive I think. rarely saw human right was a serious issue for UN and powerful countries.

They are going to die either way, on their feet or on their knees.

I would not count on receiving any help at all from the decadent Western world.

    Nothing good is easy.

Here's a nice photo. The Basij Militia are beating a man with batons and the Iranian women are rushing the militia to prevent the beating.

Clearly, not all Iranians are afraid.

I'm glad that you feel it could be effective, that's encouraging, thanks Babak. If anyone missed this on the first page of this thread, you can find emails and sample letters to send to protest her stoning here. Here's a bit more about her in an excerpt from a recent CNN article.

unfortunately Iranian people aren't familiar with Shariah law. such savagery verdict was because she confessed so if she able to saw her attorney before that this problem should not happen for her. we suffer from inhuman laws here unfortunately.

    thanks for your responsibility Rebecca.

It reminds me of these words from Alexander Solzhenitsyn:
"How we burned in the prison camps later thinking: What would things have been like if every police operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? If during periods of mass arrests people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever was at hand? The organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt."

Love the Solzhenitsyn. Had to appreciate the movie Defiance. It reflected those words quite nicely.

I am still waiting for you to remind us when and where have you ever fought for anything. How about you as usual pretend that you are a general and have a lot of military experience? Are you still playing your x-box war games, pretending to be a soldier?

Don´t forget when a coward uses fighting words, he just makes himself look ridiculous and becomes an even bigger laughing-stock than he already is. ;)

Bitter much? I'd say this one stepped over the boundaries of Quebecois into Islamist territory on the bitter scale. Congratulations?

Is this a chicken hawk trying to fight and defend his fellow chicken hawk?

It is just funny when chicken hawks who on one side cheer about dropping an atom bomb on Iran then on other side try to use Iranian people misery as an opportunity to claim their courage in order to hide the fact that they are just simple cowards.

    Thanks, Babak. :)

    Here's my 2 cents...

They probably are afraid. I know I would be. While I support the protesters, at this time it seems that random street protests may not be as effective in achieving any real political goal with this regime. When I look at the picture, what I feel, is that I hope they got away with their lives, and that they will not later be identified. I don't know, but it's likely that they were protesting peacefully, and the Basij Militia started beating them.

That's why I wouldn't refer to it as a "nice photo", but rather an example of the brutality of the current Iranian government towards it's own citizens. This man in the picture, beaten down, he could be considered a martyr by some, but really, did this suffering do anyone, anywhere, any good whatsoever? What they need is a clear strategy, life is too valuable.

IMO, as long as they protest, the Iranian government will continue aggressive action, even bringing in outside forces to protect the regime. If you consider, that at this time they may be arrested or beaten for criticizing the government. Under those circumstances, the safest approach is probably to find ways of moving towards slow, subtle changes. I'm not sure exactly how this would work (or if it would), but one improvement, if they could possibly attempt to eliminate the fraud in the voting system, and ensure everyone's vote is counted, that would be huge.

On the other hand, if they did have an outright revolution it would obviously be extremely risky. If they wanted to do this, street protests probably wouldn't even be on the "to do" list. I think it would involve "arresting" Khamene’i, Ahmadinejad, and probably a few other key players in the regime for later trial, taking over government buildings, declaring a new leader of Iran (until fair election could take place), and at the same time taking over the old regimes access to government finances, weapon locations, and military. But, that's just my opinion, I suppose the people in Iran will know best what they want to do.

It's actually been a long time since reading any Solzhenitsyn, I remember years ago becoming completely absorbed by "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich." :)

Solzhenitsyn became famous for his description of Gulag during the time of cold war when USA was fighting with "Godless" soviet. The interesting thing is until a couple of year ago when the failure of Bush administration became obvious to anyone with a brain, little willy and other chicken hawks were supporting the American version of Gulags in the name of fighting terrorism.

You know, if you keep rolling your eyes, they'll get stuck that way. At least that's what my mom used to tell me. Then again, she was a Canadian /chuckle.

Just making shit up now? Yay! Bush bad, yay! Anti-terrorists promote nuclear war! Yay! I wonder sometimes if people who get off on such fantasy all get together, strip down naked, and jerk each other off. I strongly suspect these people do.

Which is it man? Are we promoting the external use of force, or are we encouraging Iranian people deal with their own problems? Get your lies straight.

The American "gulags" Obama is keeping open? Can we keep "gulags" open in Guantanamo? Obama says, yes we can. I think you need to go back and read The Gulag Archipelago again, assuming you've ever read it in the first place. You might find there are a few subtle differences Guantanamo. You might recall the "godless soviets" murdered more than 20 million of their own people, not counting the many millions of foreigners. A nation worthy of praise in your book I have no doubt.

yeah life is too Valuable. opposition leaders haven't invite people to demonstration because our government brutality toward people. and you right, police arrested protesters after monitoring pictures and videos. In all the demonstrations people gathering their selves, never any leaders asked them.

I watched the videos, it's an extremely sad situation. At least, here is a bit of good news, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani will not be stoned to death. Though, I don't know when she will be released from prison. Now, Iran is claiming they were never going to stone her anyway.

It doesn't say that she won't be executed, just not by stoning.
