A friend of mine asked for advice on getting ranked for hosting related terms. Even results that don't have such a high overture count like "business web hosting" show 127 million results, with the top 10 dominated by yahoo, microsoft and similar giants. Made me wonder...is it even possible nowadays to get ranked for competitive terms? Hosting... mortgages...insurance... is it even worth trying? Or do you need like a million bucks and 5 seo companies working for you?
single word terms very hard... top key words....harder. its easier to become an adwords publisher, and have a bloody good site that converts well.
I liken the Web more and more to real estate every day, "get in there while the going's good because in the future you won't be able to get your foot in the door". I'm just happy I discovered SEO when I did and started building sites with it in mind. I wouldn't want to be starting in a few years time. Imagine trying to rank anywhere inside the top 50 for 'casino' in a few years time. I imagine it would be quite futile.
you know, most of the those sites that appear in top 10 are pr 8-10, if you can get a pr high pr like your competitors then optimize your page for the terms you would have a chance...
Not necessarily true, good seo beats good pr all the time. Even during this jagger update, it doesn't take high pr to compete.
Still it will take so much time to rank for such competitive search terms, even if you do spend a good deal on SEO, that it's not really worth to start targetting them with a totally new website now in my opinion. Even for less competitive terms (if you can still find some that do also drive traffic) it will nearly always take several months to get to the top (without spending millions)...
