iPod / iPhone video conversion.

I need to rip a DVD and convert it to work on all kinds of iPod and iPhone / MP4 players. Is there a standard format that will work across most of these devices.

magic dvd ripper is my personal favourite, its not free but you can get the code on the internet for free

I need to know if a standard mp4's will work on all variations of the iPod / iPhone.

 

im not sure about all variations... as far as i know it works on the classic and on the touch.

iPhone accepts MP4, M4V, 3GP
Personally, I use AVS video converter. Its a commercial solution and cost about $39 US dollars, but its been well worth it. And, you can convert all types of formats to ipod/iphone video to and not just DVD.
