    I would assume it would have a lot to do with the complexity of the app.

    it depends upon the nature of the application you want to make. On average it is not much costly now. Because many companies are in this field now.

    I had presumed the complexity would have a lot to do with development costs, but say for a fairly simple - medium complexity app what would rough estimates be? I searched last night and was surprised by the sheer number of developers in this field now, so presumed it had become far more competitive.

    Quite a lot, especially if you want to create something not already created which is to say something complex.
