Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't get IPB? I'm really tempted to get one right now. Why should I go for vB over IPB.

Like give me specific reasons not just vB is the best or stuff like that. I'm hoping to get some comments from some people that are actually famliar with vB or IPB and know their stuff as oppose to just crazy fans.

I used to own a vBulletin license, and I can give you three reasons why vBulletin is better than IPB (based on my past experience)

1.) vBulletin.org has way more modifications than whatever IPS uses nowadays
2.) The support is fast, and professional
3.) vBulletin has some features IPB lacks (like a built in rep system, referral, etc.)

built in rep hey? IPB doesn't got that? Yikes, that's pretty important.

Support ya, I can agree with you on that, they are pretty fast, but really I don't msg support too much.

IPB however seems more user friendly the interface and plus I find it's skins way better for just about every topic except maybe webmaster, and other internet making money stuff.

But in terms of gaming, sports and other hobbies like that IPB skins I think dominate.

    Thanks for your reply though.

Funny how only one person replied. If I haven't specific give specific reasons, there would probably have been 5 replies.:D

I also plan to start a forum soon and the only reason I have IPB is that (Powered by ...) in title and I don't like that... at all.

    IPB costs money?

    I thought it was free...

Anyway, I use vBulletin because it's the best by miles. Expensive though. If I wasn't using vB I'd use simple machines and pay someone here to make me a custom skin. phpBB would be my third choice, with IPB a distant fourth.

First of all IPB is paid, There is a free version which is invisionfree but I'm refered to thapid one. Secondly, your post doesn't really tell me anything. Just another fan comment.

BTW I heard IPB may be slower to load since they take up more bandwidth or something compared to vB. Is this true?

    Ya I agree.

But regarding the IPB being slower, how prominant is this and how active does your forum have to before this begins to who? Does anyone know. With all things equal that is, such as server.

    Simply, IPB is utter rubbish!

vBulletin is packed with so many features and easy to install modifications. IPB, however, lacks in most areas!

both have its pros and negatives points .

Vbulletin have good modification support . but from time to time we feel that it is very targeted from hackers , who every day discover a new bug .
Invision is more secure and having a good profile members which is similar to myspace ( we find this also in the last version of vb) but they have less suppport and mods than vb .

But in general you will be satisfited with both scripts

Actually I just looked into it. It seems IPB is indeed commercial software. Back when I last used it, it was free software. Absolutely NOTHING to do with invisionfree.

From my experience with the old IPB, vBulletin is much heavier on servers. IPB may be more bloated now though, as software tends to be with new releases.

vBulletin is the best though. Most stable, most features, most extras, largest install-base etc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software_(PHP)

IF you are willing to pay, get vB, else get simple machines.

    Which is true?

I don't believe IPB to any slower at all, faster if anything.

IPB gives you the features a forum software should have, keeping it compact and lightweight, yet still providing you with a beautiful and easy to use interface.

I thought one of the reasons why so many big forums were vB is because it was light weight and people want to use it because otherwise it would be hard on the server.

Iuno I always had the impression IPB was not as light as vB.

LEAVE OUT IPB..my community went down 7 times after i started with IPB with even a minute tweak with database..
then went for VB license and now we have 34k members in 7 months..
    GO FOR VB
