I am thinking to purchase the Advanced 175 IPB hosting plan for my mini animation deviant art website http://anim.tv/ (domain purchased in 1999). They offer unlimited bandwidth wich is good for my affiliates and ads. They offer the IP.Board / IP.Blog / IP.Gallery / IP.Downloads in one package + the hosting and the no technical expertise required. Something that is very easy to add contents, a bug free website and hack proof. They are hosted on a private server. Just pay'n go for $119.99/month The reason why i want to choose IPB is because not only i want to create contents for my website alone but i also want other peoples to create contents to my website. I want to make a mini-deviantart for the cartoon fans out there especially the anime fandom / furry fandom / superhero fandom where they can post limited size fan-arts and fan-fics… create mini blogs and interact with other fans and schedule conventions and meets. All this in one combo. I love: - Web-designing - Advertising - Do art commissions - Selling arts - Building mascot suits - Auctions - Selling 3D models Is this a good idea to have IPB hosted by IPB?
I have a 8TB Mac Pro 8-Core (OS X 10.6.2) and an affordable fast internet connection. Is it a good idea to host my website on my own using XAMPP for Mac OS X (Free) and purchase standalone IP.Board, IP.Blog, IP.Gallery, IP.Downloads, IP.Content, IP.Chat, IP.Converge ($364.95)? I think that way, i could save money on file storage, post numbers and freedom. Does self-hosting affect search engine ranking ? Does company-hosting improves search engine ranking ?
Have you thought about colocation hosting? Also, what is your bandwidth limit? My recommendation is to run it on a virtual (CentOS) machine if you plan to host it on your Mac, since server machines use a different operation regime, ie. more hard drive activity, some background processes (server daemons) take higher priority, etc. Still, I think that $120 a month is not a bad deal, but you might want to check some user experiences first.
well for the same price on a hostgator vps he can get http://www.hostgator.com/vps-hosting/ * CPU 3.39 GHZ * RAM 2304 MB * Disk Space 102 GB (literally 100 GB more then he's getting from them) * Bandwidth 1800 GB I would advise him to look through alot of vps/dedicated server plans and make his pick from those.
My domain name provider (DirectNIC) is offering: US$191.40/Year or US$15.95/Month for 6GB of file storage & 1000GB of bandwidth. Is this a good deal ?
That's a crap deal and I tell you why. 175 users online. That's not a lot. You'll hit that cap well before doing 3 million posts. You can get a $10 a month hosting plan from hostgator or dreamhost that will save you $1200 the first year. Use that money for prizes or marketing. If your site outgrows shared hosting then you can get a dedicated. Most forums fail so don't start by wasting money on something you just don't need.
Apart from getting cheap hosting you can also use a free forum. phpbb seems to be a very sturdy forum. The support is great because a lot of people use it. There are tons of add-on features and templates. And then of course it's free. Added to this, most hosts will probably have an instant phpbb install feature.
phpbb is so old and outdated and useless and... I could go on all day... Mybb and smf are two supreme candidates (when compared to any other free forum software) when it comes to free forum software. Phpbb is riddled with holes, much worse than IE6, if you like insecurity, exploits and hackers knocking on your door, then sure, give phpbb a try.
Overall, im very impressed with Invasion Power Board. The admin CP interface is much simple to use compared to PHPBB and vBulletin. The customer service is simply amazing and they make kick ass skins and they take care of all the settings and upgrades for you. If something goes wrong, they will fix it for you. I'm very happy for purchasing IPB. I feel so free of troubles. If i had chosen a 3rd party host, i would be dealing with codes and all that jargon i don't need to know.
Personally, as an active web-developer, I find IPB's source code very well written, especially compared to vBulletin's (prior to version 4, which I hadn't got a chance to take a look at). You don't have to write "hacks" any more, but real modules.
Yeah IPB is far more superior. Been using it and VB for years and I always have problems with VB, whereas with IPB, If I couldn't fix it, I wouldn't have to hire someone else to as I do with VB, I just go to customer service.
