IP Range causing trouble - thoughts / where's a good forum to post this?

So, lacking a good idea of where to put this ...

I'm having some problems with a particular IP range leaving a good number of spam comments on a site. While I've done some mods (home-brewed PHP-based system) to curtail the comments, I'm extremely tempted to just ban the entire IP block.

However, this site is getting hit, so undoubtedly a number of other sites are getting hit as well, so I'd like to work with the admins of the network.

Strike one, the admin contact has an AOL addie.

Strike two, I can find no reference of the company, save in IP search records.

    1) Where's a good place to ask this question :D (if not here ;) )

    2) Has anyone dealt with a situation like this? Is it even worth it?

I wouldn't even bother, save there are at least two other blocks that are small-time affairs (even a University IP) that are fairly consistent.

    Thanks all,

    ~

I think it's kind of like -- do I want to bother to spend the time to go after the guy who pickpocketed me yesterday in an elevator at the Water Tower Place mall in Chicago.. I think it's a gang.

I know some places where they tried to use the credit cards, but when I call those places like Circuit City, a big Parking company in Chicago, etc. no one really cares to help me track them down.

No one was killed, I lost less than $150 out of pocket though I'm losing a lot more in time replacing my cards and stuff, still really how serious is it?

Finally -- if you really want to track them down as a vigilante alone -- do you invite more harm on yourself?

Anyway, that's what I think it's kind of like. Just ban them and fuhgetaboutit.

    Thanks for your comments Eric.

That's one thing that came to mind (inviting more harm to the site). Yet, there's a number of philosophical problems with adopting the attitude that is all too easy to adopt ...

So, I suppose I'll collect a couple more days from the University IP, confront an admin about that, and block the others. At least when I was in school, there are only a couple of places where you can get an IP address, and they are pretty static. Comment spam is, IMO, the worst way to earn beer money ...

Err, no, maybe pretending that you're out of gas while travelling is ;)

Follow-up: Received an email this afternoon from someone with the University (I contacted one of the IP owners), to the effect that they've resolved the problem.

Best of all? Haven't received any comment spam from the IP. Based on this, I'll probably go ahead and contact the other university as well. Heck, I've already got an email that worked to base any further communications on, so ... why not?
