Now users can see a hash for the IP address that a post was made from. You can't see the ACTUAL IP address, but the hash is unique to each IP. This means you could compare two posts (maybe from two different users that you suspect might have a duplicate account)... if the hash matches, you know the IP matches.
Nice feature Shawn. This would definitely make things easier and have other people think twice before posting anything. If they're even aware that users can now compare hash marks, that is.
great feature to bring down scamming here at DP btw what's the point in displaying a hash code for the IP address?
I agree, many forum's admin don't value their members, don't take the time to help, even getting a response is hard, glad to say it's the exact opposite here.
Rats. I was ready to go install that elsewhere. Nice touch Shawn, kudos. Personally I'd be OK with just displaying IPs publicly. When somebody claims to be in a different location just so they can lull customers into working with them, then screw them over and hide behind the fact that they in some faraway shithole where the law cant reach... makes you want to call in an air strike. Nonetheless it's generally apparent if you watch the posts. Always funny when you see some bozo claims to be from Texas in one post and in another post says "My favorite sport is cricket... it's like a religion where I live". You don't need an IP search to figure that one out. I explained to a fella last week that in Texas... religion's a sport, football's a religion, and cricket is a noisy insect you put on a hook to catch catfish.
@Shawn: Are you teasing one of my mods with shiny new toys? @Rob: Cricket could be a popular sport in some parts of Texas!
Rofl... here ya go Cricket. Hmm, wait... wasn't thinking about the double entendre possibilities... I havent had enough coffee to be posting anything. I better go back to working.
There's all sorts of interesting things I'm already thinking of adding to it... Mods/admins can already see geo location to city (with map). But maybe expose country for normal users. Could also show yes/no if they were on a proxy since we already know that internally. Could potentially make it simply show all users that ever posted from that IP without actually giving the IP. Just gonna think about it for awhile before I commit to anything though.
