Internet2 to make domain names worthless

According to conspiracy buff Alex Jones (Infowars.com/prisonplanet.com) the implementation of Internet2 will according to him:

"Internet 2 would be greatly regulated and only "appropriate content" would be accepted by an FCC or government bureau. Everything else would be relegated to the "slow lane" internet, the junkyard as it were. Our techie rulers are all too keen to make us believe that the internet as we know it is "already dead".

"The first wave will simply attempt to price people out of using the conventional Internet and force people over to Internet 2,
a state regulated hub where permission will need to be obtained directly from an FCC or government bureau to set up a website."

If this is true then I'm suing ICANN for fraud because my domain names would be for all intents and purposes WORTHLESS.

So the U.S. Government is going to control the entire internet ? Great, then that leaves 151 other countries to participate in open internet for the rest of the world ! the "U.S. Regulated" internet will be seen as United States Oppression, a violation of Freedom of Speech, and only conservative republicans will ever care to use it.

How the hell is the U.S. Government going to control hubs all over the world, wifi networks, and phone lines that they don't even own ?

Yeah I read about this a while ago. I don't think it's going to happen, because A) people will not stand for it, and B) there's simply too much money being made on a free-ish largely unregulated internet. If the governments of the world were to shut down the internet as it is, then hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people would lose their jobs, companies would lose billions in revenue that they get directly from or via online activities like advertising, many companies would go bankrupt.

The internet as it is, is just too integrated into our daily lives and it affects so many people, that I don't think this will happen. But if it were to happen, it would take at the very least a decade or two to transition.

Well, the thing I read about it is that they would make essentially all domains "subdomains" like this forums section on DP is forums.digitalpoint.com so you would have thisismywebsite.maindomain.com and thisisyourwebsite.maindomain.com etc...

I don't believe the internet will ever go totally regulated like that but it's possible domains could be phased out in a few decades, who knows as the Internet is changing everyday.

    this will never happen.
There might eventually be an attempt to regulate the internet in some way shape or form, but it wont be like predicted.
i do not see domain names being phased out either.

Has this guy ever been right about anything?

No doubt they'd like more control if they could get it, but 'they' probably have more pressing concerns to deal with right now - a couple of wars, an economy down the toilet, global recession and so on.

The interent is like the wild west, it's the new frontier and eventually it will be tamed to so extent, there will be more regulation, but this is likely to be a more organic process than the one direct by a 'cenralized hub'. Besides, it is doubtful that anyone in a position of political power fully understands the issues...

Ultimately though, if it, or something similar did happen, would it make much difference? The market rules. Demand dictates. Things would just go 'underground' and some form of 'black market' internet would emerge and we'd all become 'black market domainers'. How thrilling.

    This already happens... in dictatorships.
His prediction has come true in China, Vietnam, North Korea, Burma, etc.

It is not true for Western industrialised democracies, and never will be.
Think about Google, and why we need it: because the web is totally unregulated. That's why Google is important. The only reason people use Google is because the web is so vast and complex that you can't find stuff on your own without help from a dynamic, constantly changing index.

Also, think about parked domains, cybersquatting...
what about SERP spam, email spam, phishing... all these things show us that the problem is in the other direction. The internet is totally unregulated, and that brings lots of good things as well as problems. But it's the wild west out there.

If it was all neatly arranged the way he predicts we could just navigate around using the old Yahoo directory like we did 15 years ago.

You said it yourself, the guy is a conspiracy theorist. ie wrong.
