Could you guys guide me on what I need for connecting to the internet using a laptop while outside home such as travelling. What options do I have? What hardware or software I need? Is it like home where you can have broadband without phone charge? Is is fast enough? and so on. Thanks
You'll need somewere that you can get a wireless signal (obviously) some places charge others provide the service for free it all depends were you are. In my experience in the UK there aern't that many wireless hotspots.
You will probably also want to make sure the hotel you will be staying at offers internet access in your room. I would check on that if I were traveling.
Thanks The keyword "hotspot" led me to good searches around. I guess I can find the rest. Is this the only option, I mean either I have to find a hotspot or no internet?
Where are you going? Always ask the hotel if the internet access is chargable or otherwise. You don;t want to end up with a huge internet bill upon check out.
There are several options: The hotel might offer a broadband cable conection (you just plug your pc) The hotel offers no-cost local calls (you can use your modem for dial-up connections, you just need to find out the local number for your provider). The room has some kind of wireless internet connection As telsa said, you need to find out if the hotel has internet access, not all of them do.
Bring a modem, internal or USB, and a couple of metres telephone cable. That way you can always dial up by just unplugging a phone. Also have wireless and a hotspot finder on a keyring or something so you don't have to use your laptop for that. 3d option is standard network cable. Bring a couple of metres of that too if you are serious about getting on the net. Also set up your mobile/cell phone for bluetooth data transfer to your latop. That's your 4th option.
Access in your room is optimal where you use your own computer. I have a dial up ISP that makes Internet service available from most communities. I like to have dial up numbers prepared before I leave home. Some accomodations have a business center where you can go in and use the computer facilities offered by the lodge. In cases where I have used those I am careful to whom I connect and always try to erase history and cookies before leeaving the computer. In the states most public libraries have Internet access. Our local public library has wifi connectivity. You can either use your own computer or one of theirs. Once again security is the biggest worry. Shannon
Thanks for replies I like this 4th option. Is there any drawbacks to it? At the moment I live in UK, can I connect to broad band through a mobile phone?
Where are you from? where do u live ive im outside hotspots i use Vodafone GPRS access, its slow and expensive but most of ireland is covered
I saw a guy hack into his cell phone and use its data cable to connect to the internet. It was only 56k though. It was a pretty sweet set up though...
