No, not unless you get permission from the copyright owners to stream the music. You can try emailing them and asking but it will likely cost you a fair chunk of change to obtain the rights.

Basically nothing. You can try searching for old classic music that might be in the public domain or contacting the copyright owners to see if you can come to some sort of arrangement.

You could focus your station on unsigned bands (new! cutting edge!) who would be likely to give permission to use their music in return for some airplay. Surf around Myspace music profiles and make some personalized requests. As a bonus the bands are likely to tell their friends to listen to your station too.

You can play the classics, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms. They're all out of copyright. Nonny's idea is pretty good though... Maybe you can do that... Just make sure you get the permission to play the songs in writing...

The music, as written is out of copyright, so you can perform it if you like. You can't just play a recording of someone else's performance.

While it is true many of the classics are in the public domain - that refers to the music itself. You cannot simply use a modern recording of any symphony or philharmonic, as each performing group owns the copyrights to their performance of the music. In short, you can play your own music or music you have been authorized to play.

You cannot just play any Mozart from a disc you own, as the performance of Mozart by that group would also be protected by copyright.

Best advice in the thread....a nice grass roots efforts. You can also cross promote with the bands. Have them advertise your station and you can in-turn play their songs and link back.

There is quite a bit of music out there that has a Creative Commons or similar license - you just need to put the leg-work in to find it. It's certainly feasible to run an entire station on Creative Commons music - Freematrix did it for some years, although it looks as if their website is down at the moment. But you can check out what it *used* to look like at the Wayback Machine at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://freematrix.us
