am on BSNL broadband - 256k
    $15 a month!

though the down times are huge, mostly due to the cable faults in the telephone lines

Am not sure if i have the tata-vsnl in Jharkhand, the last time i asked the tata indicom guys they told me that they don't have any unlimited plan operating in my region, and the other plans were not so good.

Airtel ? :D Hows the speed!

I am using MTNL 256 Kbps UL plan. Paying Rs. 600 + tax per month.

But I will suggest you to look for Airtel BB.. If they have service in your area. Airtel is best ISP of India, best support, best customer care.

Yes, if one compares the $/kbps rates, then India is much more expensive than countries in the western world.

    Where you from?

(I have a 196 kbps connection which costs me around $15).

In India, BSNL broadband internet is cheaper in terms of price (you get an unlimited home plan with speeds up to 2 mbps (but that is never achieved!) for the equivalent of US$ 20) but the customer care is not that much good. BTW, I am with the BSNL and my monthly expenses comes to US$ 12...

unlimited connectiosn gtarte from $15 per month to $ 25 - speed varies from 128--to 256 - thiough soem are upgrading that to 512 unlimited . abt the reliabilty -Airtlel /Bsnl ar the best (underground wiring+ minimal downtime) ; Tata+ sify -- full of downtime(overhead wiring)--some rains or storm and they are down for 2-3 days minimum. poor backup and much more--(avoid them)
