Actually, law enforcement take the issue of scammers extremely seriously in Nigeria. The problem they have though is that these are often hardened criminals, usually in gangs, and they are more than willing to use guns and other forms of violence to prevent their apprehension.

Additionally, the government is beginning to take it seriously too. Nigeria has a reputation as the scam capital of the world (though Holland and Russia may also be able to claim that). This reputation means that Nigeria is generally neglected in world trade - something they aim to change.

The punishment for email scamming is generally not applicable - these guys use hundreds of fake email addresses, spoofed ips and internet cafes. As such they are very hard to track down.

The FBI will go after anything that starts at $5,000.

The largest problem with the Nigerian scams are that they are very difficult to track down. People do get caught eventually, and I think the FBI is more interested in the people at the top, than the little ones at the bottom.

We've got one of the largest Nigerian scammers living in the US right now. He is also a member of the US Congress. William Jefferson, down in NO.

Oddly enough, he is still free...

I am curios how FBI can arest somebody in Nigeria?
You can't arest a person in another country if they don't break their country law and also you need to have a contact with the goverment of the country.
I don't know how people can be so stupid to believe the nigeria e-mail scams?
Some of the american, sorry to say, but are idiots.

I used to get e-mail scams but I send them back to the adress contact with subjets like report to MI6,FBI ...., also send them some time viruses :D and after
2-3 months they start to go away.

Can Nigeria police arest somebody in America?:D

    People please!
There are over 250 cases where the FBI have contacted the Nigerian Authorities regarding frauds made online that have damaged in a big way american citizens or businesses, nothing has been done, not that the FBI hasnt worked on it, but the Nigerians do nothing about it, consider that in Nigeria 60% of the country is not even run by the central government and the remaining 40% do what they want.
A local DVD production company shipped over 1,200 dvd's to nigeria through a well made scam that the "FAKE" Nigerian company set up, i seen the emails, website and fax details of the sale my self and it looked all legit, the company lost $7,200 plus shipping fees and when they contacted the local Federal office they where told what i stated above. They also contacted the Nigerian embassy in D.C. and their responce was "we will look into it for you" since then (18 months gone by) NADA!
Beware not to trade with any Western African company unless they pre-pay and the money is in the bank!

I track the emails and once I was inpired by the forum.419eater.com and gave my telephone and I was called from Ivory Coast not Nigeria.People should be carefull and should not jump on these.
For example if somebody is telling you that you have won the African Lottery , you should tell I don't play lottery instead of send me my prize :p
If you are doing so it is you , who is guilty at the first point.

Just out of curiosity are all Nigerians dirt bags or what? There have to be some nice ones right? My communications professor in college was Nigerian, and was a great teacher.

Why reply in the first place? Just ignore scam emails. By replying, you are letting them know they found a legitimate email to continue spamming.

Simple answer - ignore scam emails.
