Hi, I'm new and I have a question... I work for myself and I was wondering if there was any software that would allow me to access the internet from someone else's computer by dialing in to my home pc which has cable internet access? I mean how do I turn my home computer into my own personal private ISP? (i.e. I dial (555) 555-5555 and access the internet like I was dialing into AOL, MSN, Netzero, Earthlink, etc. to access the internet)
You could use something like tightvnc (do a google search for tightvnc) which would allow you to access your computer from any computer you install the software on; and it would allow you to access the internet from your machine. The software would have to be installed on both the home machine and wherever you happen to be. I use it to troubleshoot windows boxes from home. I'm not sure this is what you're looking for; however. You might want to do a google search for remote access software.
Could you use this to transfer large files from laptop to PC? Or is there a network cable which would work better? I'm not up on this type of stuff.
This is unfortunate, because I am looking to setup a dialup connection not software on the other computers.
Manic, I could be wrong, but I THINK this is a dialup on another computer, but it uses the software to connect
Why can't I just use the built in connection sharing software with windows xp? If it's anything like the linux mgetty it should work fine?
You can do this if you have a home server (with DHCP). Put the internet connection on the server and configure it to accept RAS connections. Just dial-in and the server will include you on its network allowing you to access any shared resources including internet and intranet.
ok I do have DHCP but just one last thing... 1.) What is RAS and... 2.) How do I configure it use RAS I'm useing Windows XP Home Edition By the way.
RAS stands for Remote Access Server. It same as dial-up ISPs using. Here are some instructions to configure your client to connect to your server. http://www.uwsp.edu/it/ras/instructions/WinXP/setup.htm
Heres how to setup in windows 2000 or XP. Concentrate on "Accept incoming connections" section. http://www.bulletproof.com/ProductInfo/RAS2K.stm
