Sensibly limiting children's access is smart, but more important is maintaining a relationship with our children so that we don't encourage a situation where they will just constantly sit on the computer all day and night. If the adults are constantly at the computer, why wouldn't the kids want to do the same?

allowing internet access is ok - no one can live without it these days - but making it available in bedroom is trouble, lots of trouble, as internet can be a really dangerous place too, esp for children

Well I wouldn't be that much worried about it UNLESS how know how to block websites so that the kids can't access them. You can also try and block online proxies so that can't find another way around it. The only thing left is how your kid interacts online in Social Networking websites. I'll be more concerned looking after him while he's on Facebook rather than trying to access a porn website.

But just chatting is enough for danger these days - can we just leave our kids alone to those types of video and audio chatting , that too in their bedrooms? They can meet up with good and bad guys on the vast internet, right? I wont take that much risk, until my kid is big enough to know whom to trust and whom not to.

That's the thing, I would be more cautious when my kid would go online every time in Facebook. Kids can easily learn almost all sorts of things in the internet nowadays and can sometimes be scary.

Letting a child under the age of 16 have unrestricted and unsupervised internet access is dumb as hell.

    ,

This would have been my words exactly. I have learned that you need to guide your child and teach them right from wrong. I supervise my daughter's internet usage but as she is turning 12, I know she needs a certain degree of privacy as well (Her internet history is monitored but she is a smart girl, straight A student and I trust her) and until she breaks that trust, I have to give her some privacy. (but of course, I was a teenager once myself so it is monitored as well secretly)

Well, whether or not it is good or not doesn't matter. The reality is that technology will always assimilate to the people of the world, including the youth. With iPods, iPads, and such, there is no way that parents can restrict the internet anymore, when it is apart of the culture of the arising New World Order. Plus, the internet is required for academic matters nowadays, even as far down as 6th grade. Parents must accept that the internet will be apart of the daily life of their children, because parents should really try the method of helping the child facilitate all that they experience, rather than trying to stop them from experiencing the real world.
