I have a friend in France who runs a charity or benevolent website. Actually we host it for her. The majority of her donors are American and for these PayPal works just fine, but she also would like to be able to accept donations from European countries.

What online service would anyone recommend for these donors?

I don't think anyone would want to go to the trouble of clearing Visa or Mastercards online for an occasional charitable donation. To start with it means the site owner has to get a merchant account.

I was hoping that someone could tell me that Moneybookers or some other service had a "donate" interface like PayPal, but would take payments from European countries.

Compar, try 2Checkout.com, which handles payments from any country and offers the choice paying in twelve different currencies.

    Comprar,

paypal takes Euro and Sterling which covers a vast area in Europe and is introducing a new fee structure....
I've just posted it in an old thread for a UK based health site delivering WW I see PP payments accelerating it's nearly on par with general c-card payments.

    Cheers
    M
PS I should have read the whole thread.... If it's charitable they should have a good talking to their bank. A lot of them will extend their facilities at very low cost.

Great suggestions, wondering if she's with HSBC or something like as she may be able to except direct payments with little/no conversion charges.

Just tell your friend to contact the telecom companies in the countries she is thinking about and ask them for information about the charity fund raising SMS-es :)
they are fast and easy ... and not expensive.

He can always make an international call or contact them via e-mail etc...
