International domain names - where's the game?

Say, if you really loved this site, in the sense that you want to make babies with everyone on here (whoa! bad thoughts!) and wanted to buy every variation of www.ilovedigitalpoint.com .it .il .co.uk .nz etc... how would you go about doing it at a reasonable cost to you and in a short amount of time.

(p.s. I'm not actually going to buy a domain name like the one above.)

 

Find a domain registrar that can offer you nice prices...on the other hand it only differs a couple bucks and then find out how many extensions there are since you want every extension available.

And then register them through credit card so everything is settled in a very short time frame as you wanted.

 

Thanks Edz, I've checked godaddy out and while it does quite a few, it doesn't seem to cover a lot of them. Are there any fully comprehensive registrars that do that?

 

I would really have no idea, Godaddy is one of the largest registrars in the world and i guess purchasing trough godaddy would give you the fastest result if paid by credit card at least.

The missing extensions you would have i would google for by googling .extension registrar and extension of course would be the exact extension you are searching for

Why would you want to do that?

 

To remain unique on the internet.

Let's say you have a website called...myuniquedomain.com then it would be very frustrating (or could be) depending on the sort of website that a website myuniquedomain.net or .us or .fr or .it or .org and so on would be created.

 

Also if you wanted to offer services in different languages as well.

 

Once you have the .com version, nothing else matters

 

That's probably why Google has about all extensions tied to their Name

 

GoDaddy probably isn't the registrar for this kind of service

What you are looking for is a company that specialises in brand protection online and can help you acquire all the domains in all your target markets.

Depending on how serious you are about this you could end up acquiring about 250 domains

The thing is that you won't be able to get them in all markets easily, as many ccTLDs impose certain restrictions on who can register domains.

Over the last year there have been quite a few changes in this arena, but you really do need to talk to someone who is familiar with the area.

 

Yes, Blacknight makes a good point if your name is not branded or trademarked whatever you want to call it... if the brand or name exist before you got the domains registered then they would have the right to claim the domain(s) if i am correct.

Other then that it's a matter of finding out how many extensions there are available i guess and then register your name with each extension but this doesn't as Blacknight pointed out be sufficient enough to protect your name and maybe you are even registering a domain(s) that is already branded/trademarked.

 

Edz - even if you have a trademark there is nothing to stop another company acquiring the related domains if you haven't taken steps to secure them yourself.

Securing your brand globally is expensive, but getting back domains that have been registered in "bad faith" is even more costly.

Yes, lots of money it seems to hire someone to do that, money that I can't really afford at the moment and trademarking seems quite a complicated area as well, something I'm dreading going into if the product is successful!

I thought you were talking about IDN Domains (International domain names) the multilingual kind.

Anyway from experience I'd get the names of the countries that I would certainly target if you want.

I've never done this myself though...

 

It should be noted that there would be an extremely high cost associated with this as many countries charge a lot of tax for their country specific domain.

Add to that, that you need to actually have a formed company in that country.

Take the .ie extension, you need to fill out paperwork proving you are an Irish business then on top of that it will be around $100 a year. Not bad for one domain but multiply that by the number of extensions you are after

 

Don't forget to include the whateverthedomainisSUCKS.com / .everything
