"Internal Server Error" for Admin Login Page

    My Joomla site has been online for over 5 years. I upgraded from 1.5.9 to 1.5.17 yesterday. Initially, following the upgrade, the entire site showed "500 Internal Server Error".

    I renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess and commented out "Options +FollowSymLinks". Now the website is visible to the internet, but the admin login still has "Internal Server Error"... There is no admin login screen only the error message.

    Any help would be appreciated.
