Internal Linking?

I understand the importance of internal linking, such as ensuring all your internal content is spidered and possibly increasing the ranking of those internal pages. However, is there any added benefit to throw a link back to, say, the home page or news section (or any other page for that matter)? I currently have an HTML nav bar that is present on any page, but I'm thinking more along the lines of anchored text links... Any ideas?

Personally I use anchored text links throughout my main site, especially for high volume search terms. The way I see it, for example, an internal page within my site gets a link directly to it, and I have a link that points to something else on my site, it can only help in the long run. Not for rankings per say, but for others to follow the links.
