Interlinking my websites, is it a good idea?

    Hello,

I have an image gallery website that I started 6 weeks ago and it currently has a little over 300 pages indexed in Google. I’m starting another image gallery website that's not really all that similar to the one I currently run and I’m wondering just how much it will help me in the serps if I interlink the two by adding a link to the other site on each page with appropriate anchor text?

Remember that even though they are both image based the images are not really similar for each site.

    Thanks,
    Kimmy

I don't see any harm in interlinking both sites. It would be the same as reciprocal linking. (One site linking to another and getting a link back). I think it is safe as long as you don't have a whole network of sites interlinking with each other.

However, I don't think 2 websites linking to each other will help on SERPs much. You will need to get more backlinks from other sites.

    That's my opinion too.

I guess what my question should have been is, is a site wide link from each other still credited in the same fashion as it would be if each received the same from different sites?

    Thanks,

I think it would be better if the sites were located on different servers and had different IP's. If they were the same IP the SE's might not give the links as much weight.

They are hosted by completely different hosting companies with different ip addresses.

If it helps your surfers then do it. Be careful of doing anything to obvious that is designed to only help your rankings, so linking to every page of each site from small footer links for example is probably out :p

I understand that the idea is basically that simple. At least that should be what every website should have in mind when making any addition.

However, I’m really quite interested in knowing if it’s obvious that I would be interlinking my sites because they are both owned by me and for that reason perhaps the SE’s wouldn’t give the same type of appreciation as a vote from a different webmaster run website?

    Thanks,

The search engines will probably notice unless you're very careful, and that includes having the domains on different hosts, IPs and different whois data.

On the other hand I seriously doubt you'll get penalised unless the interlinking is excessive as I stated above.
