may be few thousends. site is online since 08-Mar-2005. also has good alexa ranking. hence must be getting lots of submission every day. if its assumed approx 50 -100 submission daily you can imagin no. of emails those are going out
Do you chase the mailman down everyday and ask why you keep getting credit card offers? How did you know?
Considering this and some of the very horribly and ill-advised newsletters I have gotten from directories lately.. I am going to start considering ONLY using directories that have an opt-in policy for their mailing lists and spam mailings. Getting this goofball loop on top of the stupid google bowling and recip link newsletters I got in the last week begs for a blacklist for directories who send this stuff out.
Yep I got around 50+ of these e-mails, I did what any sensible person should do and just deleted them
I've been getting them all day also. Gotta come from a directory that has been listed here...based on all the comments. So who is the knuckleheaded b*stard? Some of the responses are amusing. All I've done is delete them. Dave
Is there nobody who knows who sent this?? It takes 10 seconds to stop it - just disable the e-mail Directory @ add-link.info from the control panel of add-link.info and that's that.
Did I miss something? I thought the originator was identified in the original as that snowblind character or whatever - didn't westhaven make that clear and even provide the URL?
Ok, I maybe missed that. Thanks. A bit interesting there are two snowblinds: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/member.php?u=6330 http://forums.digitalpoint.com/member.php?u=9118 Anyway, if anybody has him on his IM list or whatever just tell him to disable that e-mail adress.
Exactly. Don't shoot the messenger, shoot the morons that kept replying, they are the instigators of the spam, not the original sender. The fact that is was a mailing list malfunction should have been apparent after the first email was received globally. After that a simple trash can of 1 email would've ended the problem.
The mailing list isn't owned by me Jim, and it wasn't unprofessional at all. The whole incident was caused by morons continually replying. If they put the email in the bin, instead of replying there wouldve been no issue. I wouldve thought you of all people would have had understanding of the situation since you have also had mailing list issues. tsk tsk.
Not really. What about the 10 autoresponders? And if people answer to opt-out? It is the fault of the sender, but I have aldready forgiven him.
Agree that there was morons answering, yes. I have my own e-mail list yes. But I have no isses with it. Also I have a opt-in, opt-out. Anyway, no big deal.
Its not the fault of the sender. It was a mailing list glitch caused by the software used (provided by the webhost). That would be the same as suggesting I'm to blame for my site being down for 7 days because my webhost deleted it in a botched server migration. It happens, I've certainly seen it a few times, and like I did on this occassion (depsite being advertised in the mail) I put the additional mails in the bin. It's nice to see you have "forgiven" them. It obviously wasn't intentional.
Ok I see now it was an unintentional error. Maybe you or whoever made the unintentional error should disable or delete that e-mail adress so we don't get 30 more.
There was a major software error that caused a glitch, allowing the restrictions to be removed and people to send emails to the entire mailing list without proper access. The list was formed from the URL's at http://www.add-link.info and http://www.a-web-directory.info. The problem has been fixed and the mailing list completely wiped. You will not receieve any more emails from us, or anyone else, from the list. There was nothing I could've done to respond to the problem faster - as it happened while I was sleeping. There was nothing I could've done to forsee this happening - as it did not happen the time before (and no options had been changed?) It's a glitch in the software my hosting offers. I once again apologise for any wrongdoing on my side of things. For the record it was the users sending the emails, not me. It was unintentional. I hope that cleans up any loose ends in this thread.
Jim, the mailing list was disabled and completely wiped early this morning. Check out http://info.vilesilencer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130 for more information.
As I said I don't own the mailing list. I cannot fix something I do not have any control over. edit I see Snowy has responded - disregard my comment.
