    Hello,

What are the steps when you start your first directory? I am thinking to create one and I like more to use phpLD.

At the beginning you have a directory with zero page rank how do you get people to submit links? Visitors will avoid to submit a link to new directory that looks empty and run away? :D :p

    Thanks

Build up links and increase your PageRank.
Add quality listings to your directory yourself. make sure it doesn't look empty.

You have to do some work before success comes :

Do some directory promotion - Add your site in top web directories, buy some banner/text ads to make it a strong directory..

First of all you have to make it a free directory to populate it.

Thanks for the tips. Even if is a new directory do you charge (small fee) for featured links or force to use link exchange for that?

Yes you can charge few $$ for featured listing on a new directory..
Free featured listings are not recommended.. Otherwise your featured listings will get filled within 24 hours. :D

It's YOUR site so you can charge as much as you want.

Announce your directory here, submit to directory critic and info.vilesilencer.com - if you do those 3 things you'll have a minimum of 100 links in under 7 days - probably within the first 48hrs infact!

Id also recommend paying out the nominal fee for the paid version of phpLD - its definately worth it!

As for the paid featured - go for it, there are always people like Chris (Alive) and Jeff (Aviva) that are willing to invest in brand new directories. If you wanted to go all the way you could probably start paid if you have the deep link mod installed (although that will dent your finances for a start up directory - although you'll make it back np).

:p Yes you are right. One last thing I would like to ask is if it matters what kind of domain I will use. If I find a nice domain under .eu or something else would be bad choice or better to stick with .com .net .info ?

    Thanks

Would it be bad idea to register a .eu domain instead of a .com for my directory?

    Thanks for all the help

    Domain extensions don't matter.
I'd recommend .com unless your targeted visitors are from Europe..like a niche directory.

Indeed. Finally I am thinking what options to use for submit page.

    - Featured for some $ (perm or subscription? what is better for new dir?)
    - Free with reciprocal link
    - Free with no follow ?

    Thanks for all the advice.

Participating in forums such as DigitalPoint is a good start to introduce your new directory as well I guess.
