Hello, After looking at the directory sites proferred, I have begun to take an interest in perhaps setting up a similar directory site to complement the other services offered in my string of websites.blogs. Unfortunately I do not have any real experience in maintaining one, much less starting one. What would I like to know is how do you get about starting one? Such as, what script do I use, do I require shared or dedicated hosting, etc. and what are the challenges involved in maintaining such a site? Looking forward to the explainations Thanks in advance. - MENJ
i would say use phplinkdirectory 3.0 more information can be found at www.phplinkdirectory.com This script contains excellent features, alot of designs you can find which are free. Also the directory is really easy to manage. The obstacles a directory owner would face when he/she first starts the directory is to get it well-known. So that will require tons of advertising, but you can do it by adding it to all the free directories at www.directorycritic.com If you have high budgets buy links at such places at www.directorycritic.com, www.phpldtemplates.info, www.phpld.us or any other directory / webmaster related site because that will get you target visitors. I personally am using a reseller account, and it works fine for me. You would have to devote alot of your time because if it is a free directory, you will get alot of submissions, and to maintain the quality of the directory, you would have to have strict guidelines, and review every site without a biased opinion. If going for a really good directory always good to get a unique design created. Get a nice domain, and start. If you need any help feel free to PM me.
If you're just starting out, shared hosting is all you'll need. If you do start one up, make sure you make it unique.... there are tons of directories out there already. Like smub mentioned, I'd go w/ PHPLD. Good luck!
Yea,Phpld 2.0 OR phpld3.06,both are great! As agnivo007 said, hostgator is the *best* hosting choice for your directory.( at least for me)
