I am not sure what it is.. but I will install xp on this older hp. Then once the complete blue screen section where it installs all the way up to it says where it will reboot with red bar works fine. Then once it restarts it boots back up from the cd again. I have no idea to fix this, and really can't figure it out. I think it might be a problem with my motherboard maybe...
you could also try this.....continue installation with your XP CD and at the place where it asks about locality and name...around 33 mins remaining.... put your HP CD and complete installation.....
right when the computer starts it doesn't go to that screen... It goes all the way to the beginning again.
i think someone really screwed up this computer... but what they did i have no idea... i think it might be in the bios but i am not sure...
If you have done the short format then try the regular formatting option. It might take longer but maybe it will clear out any bad sectors that are conflicting with the new install. also you might already have done it but worth a try. Also do you have your system booting from the drive or the disk during the install ?
When the promote comes up that says "hit any key to boot off cd" - do you keep hitting a key? If so that is the problem. Once you are promoted to boot off of the CD, the installer changes the boot record. Once the system restarts, do NOT hit a key when the screen ask you to "hit any key to boot off the cd..." Let the boot off cd promote time out and go onto the boot record on the hard drive. The installer will then continue. In other words, boot the system off the cd once, and only once. My step son had this problem. I loaned him my xp cd to reinstall the OS on his HP computer. He had lost his CD somewhere. About 6 hours later he called me and asked why it was taking so long to install. The system would restart and go back to "hit any key to boot off cd...." and he kept hitting any key. I told him to stop doing that and just let the system boot. An hour later XP was installed.
No it goes into the mode by itself. I do not even have to hit anything the first time around. Thats why i really think its the bios.
Is this a real XP cd, or some kind of system restore cd that came with your computer? And you said "older HP" - how old is "older"? If you are talking about a motherboard that was made in 1999, 2000 or 2001, it might not be compatible with windows XP. You might want to check the website of the company that made the motherboard. But if its that old, go ahead and spend $100 on a Board + CPU combo from pricewatch.com. I was looking at a board + cpu combo last night for my wife. Frys has an intel board and dual core chip combo for $119. If your trying to install XP on a board that is 6+ years old, I suggest you go ahead and get a new motherboard and processor.
Try with a different Windows XP SP3 Installation CD. I know a friend of mine was having this problem a few months ago, but I cannot remember exactly what it was. I think it had something with the installation disk. Try installing from other, and report if you have the same problem.
the hp came with xp. Yea it looks like the mother board because the motherboard isn't detecting the hard drive.
I tried about 9 different disks and 5 different hard drives.. for some reason the machine isn't detecting the harddrive right when it starts up... i think this is the cause..
I was told by the guy who deleted everything... that he went in there and deleted everything himself. In the process i think he really messed up the mother board.
