    Just use the HD partitioning tools,partition the HD and simply install the xp.....

    You can use many live CD's Like Ubuntu, Solaris.. etc these help me a lot when my window gets corrupted.

    It wouldn't affect the performance, although if you are a multimedia person you would be losing valuable HD space wid just OS files
