Insite Duplicate Content Penalty?

    Hello,

I was wondering if google will give your site a lower rank if you have two pages that have identical content.

eg page-1.html is the same as page-2.html

    Thanks!

    Yes, it will.
The newer the site is, and the more duplicated pages are, the punishment is more grave.

it won't give you a lower rank, it'll just hide the other in the supplemental index aka "hidden index". If you have a lot of dupe pages then only will you'll be penalized.

You should try and prevent duplicate content on the same domain but you won't be penalized for it.

why would you have duplicate content on your own site? Want your visitors to read it twice?

I dont know why you will have duplicate content in your site. It is better if you can do without it.

Google do not like to see duplicate content. You should try to use canonical link tag, it will pretty much solve the internal duplicate problem for your site.

Normally the duplicated page will not be showed on searches.
And if you have many duplicated files, then you could get penalized.
Try to avoid duplicating your own content as much as possible.
At least add adittional content to that pages, so Google don't see them as 100% duplicated.

Just 2 duplicate pages wont do much harm. Google will dump one into supplemental index. Have too much and you could be in trouble. The problem appears for wordpress blog users. You have some plugins to stop indexing those pages. Wordpress seo plugins will help

I wonder why do you need to have the same content on the two pages?
Give your visitors a break and do not dish the same thing, again. Visitors are precious and it would be foolhardy to annoy them.

I doubt if search engine would penalize you for it...but even then, it is not ethical from content quality point of view...

Usually archives in blogs generate duplicate content and is really common in most websites. The best and easiest solution is to NOINDEX the site in the meta tags or you can just add the canonical tag if it is only one piece of content.

If the page already has incoming links and you don't waste them do a 301 redirect to the original content.

I don't have a WP yet but I've read that duplication might be a problem there and there is a plugin that solves the issue. If that's the case better try to find some info about this. For 1 page it doesn't matter but if they are more you should definitely deal with this.

Duplicating content within your own domain asks for penalty (unlike duplicating content elsewhere). Check out Google webmaster guidelines and fix the issue as quickly as possible if you don't want to face the consequences.
