Okay now this is just getting way out of control. Domain registrars really need to step up there game and start limiting the use of domains. Last time I checked .info domains were intended to be used an an informational domain and the past few days I have come across about 30 sites using .info domains for companies. This is just getting really out of control. Anyone agree with me on this one?
Where have you been for the last few years? No one has enforced any of those rules for as long as I can remember. Info domains are have been so cheap for so long that they are primarly used for short term purposes and a lot of them by scammers.
There are no such rules but people can use .info for their company names with the concept of giving 'info' about their company or product and hence the .info domain
As a domain registrar, we can't force such rules .. how on earth could we know that a ".info" domain will be used for a company rather than providing information ? The only way to fnd out, is to wait for the domain owner to upload his/her content and then manually check every and each domain .. which is out of question
No. "information" can mean anything under the sun, it's a meaningless criterion. Anyway, all .info means to most people is spam.
.info have become more populot because they are the cheapest domains to buy at the moment, godaddy is selling domains for 1.99/yr
Yes, they were intended for information sites/companies, but no one wanted to use them. So they started allowing lower prices. Godaddy bumped the price back up to 1.99??
I like to see .info's being used for information sites but I agree that there is no way of enforcing this. I know of (and create) many information sites with .info domains but do also see a lot of spam ones due to the cheap pricing which is a shame.
In hindsight you could say that having multiple generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org and .info) wasn't a very good idea. A single one would have been enough, and would have saved all of us website creators some money. Now when you make a new site you have to make sure that you have at least the .com, and then to be really sure also register the other three. NB For one of my sites I selected a .info domain on purpose, even though they have a bad reputation in SEO land. I think most end users don't care at all which TLD you use.
UP to $1.99? That's just comical. Unfortunately ".info" is now synonymous with spam sites, cheap blogs, crappy directories, and dead sites. For me, seeing a site with a ".info" extension is like seeing an email that say's "Dear Friend, A moment of your time" from an MSN address
By that logic, ".com" is short for "commercial" and as such should be all spam sites selling products like "Shammwow", and "Garden Genie's".
yeah a lot of people use .info domains as a short term domain.... and as they are very cheap the are buyed like chicken nugets
why "crappy directories" ? Better register one word .info than stupid characters or letters w/o any meaning like 5L .com or even 4L.com not talking about 4C or 5C.com waste of money I like .info domains! You can find good keywords also .com and .info are both gTLD so there is no difference about SE
Sorry didn't mean to offend anyone. It's just that every time I get spammed either here in the forum (via PM) or email, ".info" seems to follow the address. I also see a lot of new webmasters grab ".info"'s (not even good ones with any keywords in them) for their splogs because they are cheap and it bugs me. (Don't ask me why) Hey, I could just be a domain snob..I'll admit it. If all that's left is a ".info" and I can't find or buy anything else..I won't do it. To me the only good ".info's " are direct matches to keywords or keyword combination's, and those are all gone. There are a lot of crappy domains out there for sale, but a crappy ".info" just makes you wonder why anyone even bothered. I just don't think it has the respect of the average consumer or surfer, so why risk it?
I prefer to use .info domains in celebrities fan sites! i do also have large amount of fan sites in .info's
Keywords I registered recently with .info searchtorrent funbox hostwebsites also in other languages I think all of them are better than a random 5L ppl risk in other domains more expensive, I think for you it is not difficult to earn $1-$2 from a .info domain so there is no risk at all
just because the price is cheap doesn't mean that its less worthy to have and the cheap pricing is usually just for the first year so whoever that wants to use them for spams better make it be fast.
