.info - am I right to steer clear?

    Hi

I spend a lot of my time in the appraisals section and, from my experience there, I know that it takes a special .info domain to clear even reg fee. Therefore when I encounter .info web directories, I tend to hit the close tab button. Am I right to be doing this? And yes I know all you .info directory owners are going to come and hit me with a wet haddock at this point but I'd love some un-vested opinions too :p

You are being harsh to them. There are certain networks of .info directories that you may not like. They have Links*xxxx*.info type of directories, most of them are de-indexed by Google anyway. You should probably have SEO quake bar on to see if the site is indexed and has backlinks

You could be making a big mistake by avoiding info domain directories; the extension has little to do with value. I wouldn’t my getting my hands on seo. Info or directory .info. you should evaluate each directory regardless.

    Thanks Brian

I have used .info domain for a rarely time but I would say this. Even many .info sites are that crap, or not worth enough to waste your time participate with them in every kind. But you should not assume all .info sites are crapw. If you cut out some bias toward .info domain, you may get some extra benefits by have your site being listed in those directories or whatever. It does not hurt to get a free benefits from them. How do you know if one of thousands .info site may become a big like Digg.com or Yahoo Directory? :) Just an opinion only.

It is not the domain extension, it is who is running it. However, many .info web directories were registered because they cost at around .99 cents for the first year and on it's second year it may not exist at all unless I'm sure if it's www.directory.info where it would be worth it's second year life, but for the most they are only use for a certain specific purposes such as backlinking or for making a little money.

For the most part, due stay away from it, but I would not exclude all of them, just most of them base on what I had observe in the past.

I dont remember having "paid" for any .info directories...However, the extension unfortunately has a bad reputation when it comes to directory sites.

It's often stereotyped: .99 cents domain + free/nulled script + free hosting + crap domain name + free template + unreviewed sites = .info directory. Many .com directories are crappy too though! ...I still believe it all depends on how well the directory is maintained on a daily basis. One advice for aspiring directory owners though: certain extensions are easier to rank than others :)

Generally, .info directories are created in a bulk manner.

The same holds true for me. I have used many paid directories over the years but can't remember one .info directory that was worth my money. The .info directories are almost always cheap sites built on free scripts with free templates on free (or nearly-free) hosting as part of network of a dozen or more...all using the same category directory...or even sharing the same database...and sometimes harvesting email addresses for spam purposes.

I'm sure there are quality sites out there built on .info domains...but the reputation of .info directories is not very good.

There are only handful of good directories that are worth the money, does not matter what domain extension they have.

There are some good .info directories out there but unfortunately for every good one there are 20 crappy ones. There is nothing wrong with .info domains as such but because of past abuse by owners they now have a bad reputation.

I would stay clear of .info domains
it's true they are the same as any other TDL, but generally they are cheaper to register and thus create more spammers using them.
there are plenty of .com directories, those are the ones I would focus on.

They never last long the .info they are the ones that seems to come and go in the space of a matter of months and there for they hold little or no value to the user.
