I just noticed I have two infractions on my account.

One is said to be for 'bumping' a thread I made. If you check the thread, you will see I do not have two posts in a row.

If you look at the ones which do appear close together, you will see they are responses to inform users requesting details, and usely a timely delay between them - like me replying next day/hours later.

The second infraction was for me warning users in the thread that someone who had pm'ed asking for a link on our PR7 page was trying to mask a porn site with the link that he wanted to give, when I told him no for that, he launched a ddos attack on our server. So i warned other users in the thread. The post was deleted, and clearly I got an infraction for that - but nothing happened to the culprit who ddos'ed the server!

I had him in pm admit that he did it, forced an apology and assurance from him that nothing else would happen - in return for not doing anything legally to him for his criminal actions.

yet some DP mod felt I was deserving of an infraction for warning users of illegal activity by that member! In some states in the US NOT warning people of illegal activity can be construed as an illegal act - go figure!

I don't use your forums too often, when i do, you will see most of my time is spent in the legal forums giving out advice. I see also that another user has made a post enquiring about his infractions and was warned of another one just for the cheek of enquiring - so I guess I am running the same risk , nevertheless, the infraction for warning other users of illegal activity by another member surely should have been dealt with differently?

What's the thread? Posting 2 posts in a row isn't the only way to "bump" a thread. See this: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=380173

How do you know? Infractions are only visible to the user and staff.

Point taken, I did inform someone that I had sent a pm acouple of times (although I should have read the rules).

Given the nature of the matter, him still strutting his stuff and laughing at me afterwards - the deleted post... him not being banned.

These led to me the conclusion that nothing was done to him, because I'm pretty certain if anything HAD happened to him, he would have made a point of telling me - that's how arrogant he was.

I guess my point was more that an infraction give to ME for that has to be the craziest and most irresponsible action under the sun. I would have considered it irresponsible on my part NOT to have said anything. It would be like me being in a busy department store and knowing that a madman is running loose with a loaded gun and keeping my mouth shut. The analogy is appropriate, this is the web, this is a busy website where people come to and divulge website details for a whole variety of reasons - trade, technical assistance etc etc (from which server details can be obtained via whois dns etc), a degree of trust has to exist.

When the post got deleted, I couldn't believe my eyes when I couldn't see it anywhere seconds after posting it! I mean, it lasted about 2 mins if it was lucky --

So who was really the irresponsible one there.

Still doesn't mean he didn't receive an infraction or two.

There must have been a reason. The moderators wouldn't waste their time giving an infraction or deleting a post if it weren't necessary. Maybe you didn't provide proof or something.

    I was thinking the opposite...

in the post I copy and pasted a portion of my server logs which showed all the hits and the IP addresses they were coming from. They were all coming from a very specific location and from within a very specific range. A quick whois check showed that they were all part of one company's IP block - and the user was from the precise area of the IP addresses. Whilst I cannot see his IP address, it can be viewable to those with access from within vBulletin. That should have been enough for an admin to verify that I was in fact posting evidence of the facts.

The culprit had knocked a server offline for about 30 mins, whilst it was recovered and bolstered with additional ddos protection measures.

My only crime was to warn others of this in a very short and formal post, and the only other detail in the post was the portion of the server logs. That was the part I believed I needed to show to backup my claim/warning.

It's the action that was taken against me that has surprised me - albeit me just realising it weeks after it happened. I thought the deleting the post was bad enough, but an 'infraction' added for good measure... well, let's just say I'll hold my tongue for the present time. No need to let it run loose unnecessarily at this stage.

It'd be easier for people to give you an understanding as to why you received an infraction if you could provide the thread URL. Did the thread get deleted or just the post?
