You can weight your ads within your rotation by assigning a weight between 1 and 5.

Great news Shawn, thanks for the update.

I assume 1 is low and 5 high...or is it the other way around?

    Hi Shawn,

It sounds great - but (of course) I've a quick question.. :)

    Assuming a weighting of 100:

Can I assume the numbers are multiples of 20% of total weight ?

And how about precedence ? ie what if I assign 5 to all my ads ? Does the first in the list actually acquire full weight ? and the rest nil ? or is it even distribution ?

I'm just thinking about how I'd track a shifting distribution - ie as I add more ads, for example, right now I have 3 ads with a disposition of 5, and one with a disposition of 2.

Assuming a total weighting of 1000, how is it being distributed. ?

    Thx

    JL

Ps (I trust you read the thread about Kroos shoes ? - I figure someones missing out) :)

Yeh, I'm confused too. example of 3 ads. Does the weight amongst them have to equal 5? (2, 2, and 1 - or 1, 1, and 3 - or what?) Or does it matter? (I hate math).

Altering your ad weight does NOT affect your user weight. User weight is what determines how often one of your ads are displayed. The user weight is used to decide who gets an ad displayed first of all. Then it looks at that user's ads to decide which of their ad is displayed. The 1-5 doesn't mean much of anything, other than if you add your total numbers up between all, you could figure out what the chances are that an individual ad is displayed when your "number" is picked.

So, to make a long story short, if you set all your ads to the same number (5, 3, whatever), the end result is EXACTLY the same as them all being 1.

Bottom line is the ad weight has nothing to do with user weight. Maybe it should be called something else so this question doesn't keep coming up. Any ideas? :)

Perhaps 'ad weight' should be something other than 'weight' to avoid confusion. Perhaps 'Display Ratio' or 'Display Frequency' would be better.

In the FAQ, it could be described as 'A ratio of 5 in 5 is the highest, while 1 in 5 is the lowest. It allows you to set a local preference among your ads, which remains secondary to, and exclusive of, your Base Weight. For example, if all ads have the same ratio (say 1) they will be displayed just as frequently as if they were all set to 5. However, if I had 5 ads, all with different ratios (say 1 to 5) then across 15 impressions, one would be displayed 5 times, one would be displayed 4 times, one three times, and so on.'

What do you you guys think ?

    Cheers,

    JL.

Shawn's initial description sounds clear enough to me, but you describe it VERY well, and I do not see how anyone could have trouble understanding it with your explanation.

Yes very well written - now of course you could automate the whole thing like this

You assemble 5 ads with keywords such as

    "SEO"
    "Search Engine Optimization"
    "etc...

and you select the automatic button and the script goes and looks at the keyword suggestion tool finds the returns for each of the keywords and automatically weights the 5 ads based on the results. Each time the ad is due it resorts its weighting!!

    Hehehe....just kidding :D
