Indirect SEO

Let me start by saying I've got almost NO experience with link building or SEO. I have done some research and I'm preparing to start a campaign pretty soon.

My idea (and I'm sure this is pretty common) is to not attempt to get my site to rank well. Instead, I'll be trying to get yahoo answers articles to rank for long tail keywords, which in turn link to my site. My question is, would it be more effective for me to build links to my yahoo answer pages, or should I be trying to build links to my website?

It's not "pretty common". I would say that's pretty strange and unique idea (although not a good one :p )
May I ask what's wrong with trying to rank your site well?

I don't want to try and rank my site because I don't think it can be done. First, there's way to much competition for me to do that, and beating that competition will mean buying thousands of dollars worth of quality back links. Second, my niche is very difficult to build links for. It's a rather boring subject that can't really be blogged about, and nobody has any real interest in it.

Well in that case you should consider submitting quality articles with links to your site here: http://ezinearticles.com/
Articles on this article directory usually rank quite well in Google and Yahoo.
What's your niche after all? Can't you find some decent keywords with a relatively low competition?

I'm in the employment niche. There are a few semi-decent longtails available to me without any competition. The sites that rank for those keywords also don't really target the traffic that well. But they do have PR between 4 - 6 which is something I couldn't ever hope to outrank.

I'll try that article site you referred.

a well optimized PR3 could likely get involved then. that's not so hard?

Blacklinks from Yahoo Answers are NO-Follow so it's an absolutely crap idea

Sure I suppose your right. Like I said I've got no experience with this at all so yeah maybe. Is it very difficult to get a site to PR 3 without natural link building?

@london: The point isn't to pass PR from yahoo answers to my site. The idea is that users would search google for "domains being ghosted", and find a yahoo question I only asked yesterday ranking as #1. That question / answer could link back to my site.

@sint3z you didnt read his post well-- i think it is a sound idea and no-follow should not matter(he isn't tryin to rank remember for his own keyword so backlinks to his site in an effort to rank in such a way does not matter...)
yahoo answers rank decently and with his help his ones will outrank the avarage for his niche in long tail keys
in then he will receive the targeted traffic increase

it just seems the only question is to have that many yahoo aswers rank(even for long tail) - meaning of-site optimize them
would maybe require more effort than tring to rank for your main competitive keyword in terms of equal resulting traffic when comparing results of these 2 different approaches

and getting pr4 is not that hard 300 decent one-way links or fewer can get you there
    anyway...
