Generally I address to my client or their subordinates (mostly they are from middle management level) by Mr., Miss, Madam or ji at the end of the name (which is used for giving high respect) , irrespective of his designation, Any person form the client's organisation is equally important for me.

Many time I am dealing with foreign companies, there also I would like to address their representative with JI at the end of his/her name, some of them ask me about it and I give them an explanation for it.

English is my fifth language, so it is quite natural I would not be as powerful as who's first language. Here I would like to give you the comments by one of my senior editor (I am a editor for one top web directory), she says you are doing good in English looking at this is your fifty language, where as we know only one language.

Also like to add the current generation in India are very powerful in English who has studied in convent or good English school. This I can say with the experience of my two children and many young people in DP.

I think one must take his/her salutation in good manner.

I think they are using "Dear" to take the p**s, at first i thought it was just a mistake but now i think they just laugh at us westerners. :)

In the UK, many asians say init after lots of things, it appears to have been adopted from when i was younger and we used less than correct english we would say ent it as in isn't it but for some unknown reason, asians in the UK use it incorrectly, so they may say something like:

Im going down the shop init, which makes no sense and sounds terrible.

But yeah im pretty sure that the asians saying dear here are just making fun of europeans, lol

Just for the record though Dear asians :)

The following are incorrect on a forum

    Hello mates
    Hello dears
    hey friends

You wont be taken seriously by many people. ;)

Yes, I agree with you point. I am an Indian and have done business with many people online, but I have never used the word "Dear" with them. I know what it means!
However I have myself come across with some people who use "Dear". Didn't pay much attention to their Nationality. But it seems you caught 'em.
BTW, its nothing wrong in correcting them. I appreciate your initiative!

This is funny. Either he's gay or he's just being naturally sweet. :p So you're not a women? Lol. Just kidding.

Maybe it's something to do with their culture.

I don't chat but some of my female friends who do say most of those who are active in the chatrooms are Indians. Guess they're just naturally romantic, which shows in their frequent use of this seemingly "favorite" word. :)

If something annoys you then do something about it, but be carefully how you do it.

its a custom in India to start a letter with "Dear Sir". its just meant to be very polite ;') so some people tend to overuse it. and i dun think dear must be reserved for sexual partners. love, sweety, darling, baby and there are too many words :( so "dear" charles.. dun get alarmed with this... hehehe. anyway people generally dun use the word dear for business transactions.. so i can see why u get annoyed :)
