I am myself an Indian. From my experience, I can safely tell you that in India, the awareness about copyrights and intellectual property rights is very low. Many people think its is ok to share pirated mp3s, DVD rips, ebooks, etc on 'desi forums'. I have had sever ridiculous memories:

    1. On the forum of a leading Indian IT magazine, there was a member who actually bought a genuine license for some software and was redistributing it to any 3 members on first-come, first-serve basis. When I told him that it is illegal, he said "I have BOUGHT the software so I have the rights".

    2. Just today there was another member who thought he is doing a very nobel work by sharing pirated PDF of popular books. When questioned, he cited "I am poor". Fine, poor so he got a pirated copy for himself, but how was he justified to redistribute it? Trying to go to heaven or jail?

    3. I have observed many blogs stealing content/news from other popular websites, pasting them in full on their websites and simply giving back a 'source' link.

The Indian masses know how to use the internet and computer, but they are not really aware of laws. Partly this is because of forex exchange rate which multiples the cost more than 40 times and other reason being they were never taught that 'intellectual' rights do actually exist. Atleast I don't remember any such thing being taught to me. May be a small portion of intellectual property be included in our syllabus!

    Well Rohan!!

I completely agree with you. An also to let other people know, one of my friends running a video site recetly recd a notice from T-Series Legal advisor. His intenstions were straight and no has intentions to display any illegal stuff. but some videos resulted in this problem and he is now talking to them and soerting out this issue. He has completely shutdhown the website but T-Series Legal advisor keeps on sending letters for the same. They have demanded a sum of Rs. 1,00,00,000 as the copyright infringment fine.

Yes, Indians are smart, but lets look at teh other side which is more prominent.

I will put it straight for you.
Indians get the outsourced work because they can work for 'cheap' due to forex rates.

Lets say you pay $50 here to get a script. In India $50 is equivalent to something more than Rs. 2,000. Mind you Rs. 2000 is a considerable amount here, not that one can just shell it out from their pocket when they fell like. So if an Indian actually wants a salary of Rs. 500/per day, you will be paying only $12.5 or may be much less of Indian labor whereas in US/UK, you will end up paying more than $20 per hr. So now do you understand what makes India outsourcing tick! ;)

And yes, if there are some really talented Indians, they either have jobs abroad or well-established in industry (unless they are the low self-esteemed ones who cannot recognize their talents and want to slog their life for a peanuts worth monthly salary)

You won't believe, but I was able to use a basic SQL injection attack and XSS attack on the website of Digit magazine-the leading Indian It magazine. It was designed by some 'indus net technologies' which claimed to be India's leading internet consulting firm with 10 years of successful and prosperous experience. So you see how non-talented companies can become successful in India. Ofcourse work discipline and ethics are a BIG issue here. Talk about intellectual property rights and you are responded to with "Pardon me, could you please explain me what that term means"?

Not to say 'Indians' don't have talent, but its often the non-talented ones are the ones who bag the deal. I know bad luck.

Take it as a rule of thumb: Any Indian business, unless acclaimed internationally , will suck to the core, irrespective of turnover, share price, brand equity, etc.

If you need quality from Indian outsourcing, pay slightly more than what the average ones are charging. And don't ever bother to outsource to an Indian firm. Most of the times, they hire unskilled noob freelancer developers and screw your projects worst. After all, if you want it cheap, take it with a lot of salt(and not just a pinch of salt)

I will tell you how to identify an cheap Indian firm: You will mostly find them posting on freelance sites or forums like below: Look the presentation, self-esteem, grammar.
Chances are that probably only the employees of the firm know that firm and nobody else knows it.

And btw did I tell you that I am myself and Indian and I stay in India :) India has a very unfavorable atmosphere for people who want to work ethically and genuinely. Thats why you see talented Indian in US/UK or other parts of the world. And most of the times, these abroad settled Indians don't want to come back to India after leading the abroad life.

btw Sorry if anyone is hurt, but I just explained the ground situation and i am confident that you will agree with me for most parts.

Hey Rohan, I agree with your points made, actually you seem to be slightly frustrated. Relax buddy, Like they say Grass is greener on the other side, start on with your own stuff, deliver quality and make it BIG in India.

There is lot of money to be made in India staying with family.

I agree with Rohan.he has got valid points but friend we can not say all Indian freelance sites are sh*t..
As far as question of IPR is concerned, teaching in schools or colleges is of no use until it is practically taught..i have done few courses in IPR but still when i go out and see what all is happening i feel that there is no use of such courses..

Hope some day this all will change....
