    A new symbol for the Indian Rupee has been approved by the Union cabinet.

    This is how it will be:

    I think the designers on DP could have done a better job than this one, i find it kinda average.

    The cabinet has merely selected the final one... from the 6 symbols short listed by the experts from a pool of entries received from all over India in the open competition announced by the government.

    I think the process adopted was democratic and fair enough... to get the best symbol for the INR! :)

    Actually, it is symbol which is derived from alphabet "R" in English and the alphabet "Ra" in the Devanagari script (which is common to many Indian languages).

    The symbol for a currency has to be simple, so that it can be easily written by the common man.

    @RightMan, Yup i was aware of it's submission process, and yes i agree the selection was fair enough, though i just feel they could have done much better.
    @monsia - I'm from India as well :D
    @sachin - agree with you on it's simplicity.

    So instead of an "S" with one stroke ($), they take an "R", get rid of the "|" and add two strokes. Oh, how creative! A culture with such a long, ancient history, some of the worlds most brilliant scientists and mathematicians, and all they can think of is: "How do we do to come close as possible to the dollar sign." :rolleyes:

    Well, it's ok, I guess. :cool:

    The symbol is an amalgam of the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' without the stem.... and the two parallel lines running at the top symbolizing the 'equal to' sign! :)
