The Government of India has launched this tablet on October 5,2011 naming it "Akash" which means "SKY" in English. With its previos prototype name as "Sakshat" which means "Embodiment", it was renamed on its launching.

This tablet was designed and developed by Indian Institute of technology in partner with a British company DataWind.

Yes $35 is the price of this all new tablet for students and for the general public its just $60. Comparing the price of all the tablets in the world this tablet is the cheapest of all. Including all the features it just cost so less.

Actually Chinese tablets are lower in price :) This Indian tablet will cost $60 to the general public, but a similar Chinese tablet is sold in China on the domestic market for $50. So the Chinese tablet is still cheaper.

If it's as good as most of the Chinese ripoffs, it isn't worth even 60 cents. Price alone doesn't determine whether something is worth buying, unless you don't understand reality.

Hope that will help to bridge the digital divide in India. A great initiative on the part of the government of India and let us wait and watch how it fructifies...

Is it already commercial now? I guess it would be tough to compete with Japanese or Korean product.
