Just a quick question regarding indexing.

Do you believe its better to submit your link to google or wait for them to come across your site, crawl it, and index your site themselves?

(or do you believe it makes no real difference?)

Never take a chance. Google takes its own time to crawl your site and hence it is better to submit your link for quicker indexing.

i dont think it makes a difference, no need to submit it though as it should get indexed on its own just fine

If you build some high quality backlinks to your site, it will be indexed much
faster than if you submitted it to google.

I usually just link to it from one or more of my sites that are crawled most often and submit a few articles. I submit RSS feeds to a bunch of directories and it usually gets indexed pretty quickly. I never bother to submit the site to Google.

I think it is better to submit your site. If you have no enough back links it will take time for google to know that your site exist.

The best way is to have a sitemap which automatically notifys Google of new content. I have this on my blog and I get indexed within an hour of a new post.

The best and fastest way to get your website indexed in Google, is to get backlinks that Google Bot will follow ;)

Google recommend that you submit it to them ("Once") and then use Webmaster Tools and a XML Sitemap.

The search engines, including Google work to improve their technology so they can provide more results in real time (results that provide fresh content). So if you have content that is valuable and people like it, you'll be indexed and ranked high.

Build some backlinks from pages that are indexed in google and your site will get indexed quickly. However, submitting your site to google is good idea. There is no problem in submitting a site to google.

To make google index your site REALLY fast, put a link to your site on any hi-trafficked site. You will be indexed within a week.
