Indexed Page Count Fluctuation

I noticed that when I do the "site:" search on my domain for Google, the indexed page count has dropped significantly. While I know it fluctuates, it's dipping below 5,000, while it has been as high as 14,000 indexed pages in recent months.

    Anybody else seeing this?

    What is occurring this?

Traffic has not slowed much but still...what's going on?

same here, 1 month ago 2.3 million pages indexed, today 700k...
traffic is about exactly the same though so who knows...

#1 either googles numbers are wrong
or most likely the correct answer is
#2 google deindexes pages that dont get searched/clicked after X days and replaces them with other pages as im sure 1 month from now i will have 2 mil pages again as this is nothing new happens every month or so

If you have duplicate content, those pages might be disappearing into Google's supplemental cache.

    It works like this :

Pages need links to them to stay indexed - at least one even from your own sites indexed pages.
Pages can be no further then 2 clicks away from your front / index page.
Pages that are similar to your indexed pages will drop - seen as duplicate pages.

So try to get links to your posts or pages, and submit and create a sitemap and link that to your front page.
