Hi, I have a site that is running for a couple of years now and many sites are linking to it. Recently I have checked the indexed links in Google and in Yahoo and the figures are really strange. In Google I have 140 links pointing to my domain and in Yahoo I have 21100 links pointing to the same domain. How come Google is only showing less than 1% of all the links indexed in Yahoo. And is this affecting the ranking in the Search Engines? According to the Digital Point backlink tracker the number of backlinks in Google dropped in April 2007 from about 1300 links to 140 links. Have you an idea of what may have caused this? Thanks for your help!
That's Google for you. It's always been this way as far as I know. Google probably cuts out repetitive links to cut down on filling up their directory. I think Yahoo lists about every link possible. Or, maybe someone else can shed some light on this.
yahoo will typically give you a more accurate number - google openly admits they only show a sampling
Airraid81: No really, at least in my case. There's of course a lot more domains with links indexed in Yahoo than in Google for my site. And also in Google on the 140 links I have there's many that are from the same domain.
Google recently did a big revision to everyones backlinks as well as a Pagerank beat down on most sites on the internet. I think it was to take some stream out of the text link industry but thats just my opinion...
Newz12 Go get yourself a Google Webmasters acct. The metrics are far more realistic. Just using Gs public index will only show a small sampling of IBLs. Yahoo on the other hand seems to reflect every instance of a link it finds pointing to your site - even if the link normally wouldn't be followed. Good luck.
As was mentioned before, Google recently did a resampling of thier backlink count and historically only show a percentage of the actual backlinks relative to say Yahoo. It's that way for everyone, not just you-
Google "link:" search is notoriously off. Webmaster tools does a better job, but it isn't spot on. Yahoo does have a much better sampling.
