Ok, so I have mainly like... 7-10 main pages and 3 main category pages among that... and within those 3 categories I have 3000+ pages (it updates daily with more & more headlines coming in) with the growing pages in my site being updated once/twice daily in my sitemap. Speaking of which that's pretty much what I have updated in Google but when I look in the Webmaster Sitemap section of my account that's where the confusion sets in. See... Google only indexed like... 7 pages in my site map even though it recognizes that 3000+ pages are in there (even more confusing... when I go to link:mydomain.com in google search nothing shows up and I know I have several links going into my site because stuff showed up before & now they aren't... wtf? ) and this also leads to yet... more confusion... See in google analytics it seems that I suddenly over the weekend jumped from the usual 1-4 visitors per day to 120+ (and no I'm not gonna complain about that there ) YET all of these visits are going to my pages that are supposedly aren't in Google's index. While I suppose trying to implement the concept of long-tail keywords & having article titles show up as part of the "pretty" permalinks of each added page is starting to pay off... I'm confused on how Google is delivering users to them in the first place even tho they aren't seemingly indexed from sitemap as only 7 URL's are indexed out of the 3000+ in my site (again according to Google Sitemaps information). I mean, I know I started off with the 7 pages and that's what Google still has in there but my 3 category pages & 3000+ of growing pages are yet to be accounted for. Just wondering if Google is acting bi-polar with me or anything since this has me as confused as a squirrel crossing a freeway
On these forums discussions are started best by quoting an article or a quick 2 sentence question. Maybe over the weekend they got indexed and google hasn't caught up yet with their list of indexed pages?
Ah gotcha on the former (guess it seems long winding to skim through). The later also seems to make some sense as far as showing me what they indexed thus far though a couple things still puzzles me. Like no results when I search link:mydomain.com in google which turned up results beforehand ;\
i wouldnt worry too much about what results you see from link:yourdomain. from everything ive read, these results are terribly inaccurate and fairly meaningless. if you really want to check your backlinks, use yahoo, or a backlink checker such as this one or this one the main search in google that you should be paying attention to is site:yourdomain to check which of your pages are indexed.
HA!! Thanks CGlines.. for some oddball reason I don't think I tried the site:mydomain.com in google, just did and now I see that I have 1000+ of my pages being indexed so now I have a better idea on what's going on Will also peep those backlink checkers you listed too for more reliable info to ease my nagging curiosity. Thanks for dropping those gems fam!
no problem. glad i could help. no question is a stupid question around here. feel free to give me some positive rep if you wish
