Not sure if this will help you, but there is an article here that mentions 45 ways that you can get traffic to your website. I have used many of these ways, and some work better than others, but they all help in some way or another.
You could also possibly add Adsense revenue sharing to your forum and general website. It, along with other things, could help your site grow. Also, I've got a list of revenue sharing sites, which you could let me know and I'll add your link to it (if you decide to go this route). *I'd also suggest trying to find religious bloggers to write about your site.
What do you hope to achieve? IMHO, you might want to buy both. Clicks for PPC ads but impressions for banner ads. Try advertising at forums and websites related to yours.
